Overall Objectives

Provides leadership for Yinghua Academy's student development, family engagement, English academic instruction, and student support programs. The Director of Student Development and Family Engagement works collaboratively with school leadership, teachers, staff, students, and families to promote academic success, positive student development, student well-being, and a safe and supportive school environment. This position provides instructional leadership for Yinghua's English academic program while also overseeing student support systems, family engagement, behavioral support, school safety, and designated student programs. The position advances Yinghua Academy's mission, core values, and guiding principles.


Principal Roles & Responsibilities

Academic & Instructional Leadership

  • Provides instructional leadership for the school's English academic program, including English Language Arts, Science, Social Studies, Physical Education, Reading Intervention, English Learner (EL) programming, and other assigned instructional programs.
  • Works with Academic Directors to coach, evaluate, and support instructional staff and conducts regular classroom observations to promote instructional excellence and professional growth.
  • Leads the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of curriculum, instructional practices, and academic programs to strengthen instructional effectiveness and student achievement. 
  • Collaborates with the Academic Team to implement and strengthen Yinghua Academy's Literacy Plan.
  • Utilizes student achievement data, benchmark assessments, classroom observations, and instructional technology systems to evaluate instructional effectiveness, guide decision-making, and improve student outcomes.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director and other school leadership to establish academic priorities, annual goals, and instructional initiatives.
  • Researches and recommends instructional resources, curriculum materials, technology tools, and best practices to improve student achievement.
  • Participates in strategic planning related to academics and long-term school improvement.
  • Collaborates with the Academic Directors to ensure consistency across the school's bilingual instructional program and supports/promotes Yinghua Academy's Mandarin immersion model, charter school mission, and educational programs.
  • Oversees the English Learner (EL) program and supports students and families who require language access services.
  • Oversees academic improvement programs, including ADSIS, academic interventions, and READ Act assessments.
  • Oversees implementation of Yinghua's Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS).
  • Helps develop and provides feedback for the annual academic calendar related to instructional programming, benchmark assessments, and report card timelines.
  • Collaborates with classroom teachers, interventionists, Special Education, and Student Support staff to ensure students receive appropriate instructional supports.
  • Oversees technology implementation from an instructional perspective, supporting effective integration of digital learning tools into classroom instruction.

Student Development & Behavioral Support

  • Promotes a positive school climate by establishing, communicating, and supporting clear behavioral expectations for students.
  • Provides educational lessons, activities, and guidance that promote positive behavior, responsibility, self-discipline, healthy decision-making, and positive student development.
  • Supports teachers, students, and families in addressing behavioral concerns; coordinates appropriate interventions and develops student support and behavior plans in collaboration with relevant staff.
  • Provides direct support and guidance to students who need assistance with organization, study skills, self-management, decision-making, or other areas affecting academic and personal success.
  • Collaborates with Special Education, counseling, intervention, and student support teams to develop preventative strategies and coordinated supports for students.
  • Maintains accurate documentation of significant behavior incidents and interventions, including entering major behavior infractions into Infinite Campus and preparing required annual reports for submission to the Minnesota Department of Education.
  • Uses data related to student behavior, attendance, engagement, and academic performance to identify trends, inform decision-making, and support continuous improvement.

Family Engagement & Student Support

  • Serves as a primary point of contact for families regarding student development, behavioral concerns, academic support, and school resources.
  • Builds positive and collaborative relationships with students and families and promotes open, timely, and respectful communication.
  • Schedules and facilitates meetings with families and appropriate school staff to address student concerns and develop collaborative solutions.
  • Supports students and families who require language access services and works with staff to ensure families have meaningful access to school information, resources, and support.
  • Establishes and maintains partnerships with outside agencies, community organizations, and service providers that support students and families.
  • Provides guidance and support to families in understanding school expectations, student support systems, academic interventions, and available resources.
  • Supports the development, implementation, and communication of policies and expectations outlined in the student and family handbook.
  • Participates in parent meetings, curriculum nights, school events, and other activities that support family engagement and community building.

Department Leadership & Program Oversight

  • Provides leadership, supervision, and coordination across designated student support and student life programs.
  • Supervises the School Counseling Department, including school counselors, supporting student social-emotional development and academic success.
  • Oversees the Health Office, including the School Nurse and Health Paraprofessionals.
  • Supervises the Student Development & Family Support team, including behavior interventionists who provide targeted behavioral support to students.
  • Supervises the Student Life and Activities Department, including the Student Activities Coordinator and Dragon Life Organization.
  • Supervises after-school athletics programs, Physical Education staff, Recess Supervisors, Lunchroom Monitors, and other designated student programs and personnel.
  • Provides leadership and oversight for other student programs and services as assigned by the Executive Director.
  • Ensures communication, coordination, and consistent expectations across student support departments and programs.

School Safety & Crisis Management

  • Serves as the leader of the school's Crisis Management Team.
  • Works closely with the Executive Director to plan, coordinate, and implement school safety procedures and emergency response protocols.
  • Provides leadership and coordination during emergency situations to support the safety of students, staff, and visitors.
  • Updates the school's Safety Manual annually and ensures that required safety procedures and protocols are communicated to staff.
  • Plans and implements required safety drills throughout the school year.
  • Provides annual staff training on safety procedures, emergency protocols, and crisis response.
  • Attends required safety trainings and collaborates with local agencies and emergency responders as appropriate.

Professional Learning, Staff Support & Leadership

  • Coordinates the development and implementation of the annual professional development calendar in collaboration with Academic and Executive Directors, using classroom observations, staff feedback, student achievement data, and school improvement priorities to inform planning.
  • Works with Academic Directors to facilitate Professional Learning Communities (PLCs), curriculum meetings, and instructional collaboration across academic departments.
  • Assists with teacher improvement plans and provides targeted coaching and support when needed.
  • Mentors and supports new staff in developing and implementing effective student development, behavioral support, and family engagement practices.
  • Works closely with Human Resources throughout the hiring process by participating in interviews, reviewing and leading demonstration lessons, conducting reference discussions as appropriate, and making hiring recommendations.
  • Coordinates teacher mentoring, induction, onboarding, and orientation for instructional and student support staff in collaboration with Academic Directors and other school leaders.
  • Promotes a positive professional culture and supports effective collaboration among academic, student support, and administrative teams.

Program Administration & Compliance

  • Serves as the school's Title I instructional lead and District Literacy Lead.
  • Coordinates the development, submission, implementation, monitoring, and reporting of the school's ADSIS and ESEA grants.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director to prepare academic reports and documentation required by the Minnesota Department of Education and the school's authorizer.
  • Ensures compliance with Minnesota Department of Education requirements, federal regulations, grant requirements, and school policies related to assigned academic and student support programs.
  • Serves as the primary point of contact for Tier 3 and Tier 4 teacher licensure renewals by maintaining accurate professional development records, issuing continuing education certificates, providing guidance on renewal requirements, and supporting staff through the Minnesota licensure renewal process.
  • Oversees assessment coordination, including MCA, NWEA, WIDA ACCESS, and other district or state assessments.

Communication & Collaboration

  • Maintains effective communication with teachers, administrators, students, families, and community partners regarding academic programs, student development, behavioral concerns, and school initiatives.
  • Collaborates with the Executive Director, Academic Directors, Special Education Coordinator, counselors, and other school leaders to ensure coordinated academic, behavioral, and student support services.
  • Represents Yinghua Academy in meetings with the Minnesota Department of Education, educational organizations, community partners, and outside agencies as appropriate.
  • Participates in Leadership Team meetings, contributes to school-wide planning and decision-making, and helps to ensure consistent implementation of school policies and procedures.
  • Responds to emails, phone calls, and other communications in a timely and professional manner.
  • Promotes collaboration, consistency, and a positive culture across academic and student support departments.
  • Presents academic performance, student development, and student support information to the Board of Directors as requested.

Requirements

Qualifications

  • Master's degree in Education, Educational Leadership, Curriculum & Instruction, or a related field required.
  • Valid Minnesota teaching license required.
  • Prior instructional coaching, curriculum leadership, or administrative experience preferred.
  • Experience supervising, coaching, and evaluating instructional staff preferred.
  • Ability to work effectively with students across multiple grade levels and adapt quickly to different classroom environments. 
  • Demonstrated ability to lead school improvement initiatives and build collaborative instructional teams.
  • Strong knowledge of Minnesota Academic Standards, assessment systems, and evidence-based instructional practices.
  • Strong organizational, leadership, interpersonal, communication, problem-solving, and conflict-resolution skills.
