What does a development team lead do?

A Development Team Lead is responsible for guiding a team of software developers through the planning, development, and delivery of software projects. They coordinate tasks, set priorities, and ensure the team follows best practices and meets deadlines. Additionally, they often serve as a technical mentor, help resolve issues, and act as a bridge between the development team and other stakeholders. Their role is critical in ensuring high-quality software products and a productive, collaborative team environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a development team lead?

To thrive as a Development Team Lead, you need strong software engineering expertise, experience in project management, and usually a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with agile methodologies, version control systems like Git, and project management tools such as Jira or Trello is typically required. Excellent communication, leadership, and problem-solving abilities help motivate teams and manage stakeholder expectations. These skills are crucial for delivering high-quality software on time, fostering collaboration, and driving team success.

How does a development team lead balance technical responsibilities with leadership duties on a daily basis?

A Development Team Lead typically splits their time between hands-on coding or technical oversight and team management tasks such as mentoring, code reviews, and facilitating communication between developers and other departments. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong time management skills and the ability to prioritize tasks based on project deadlines and team needs. Team Leads often run daily stand-ups, coordinate sprint planning, and address blockers to keep projects on track while also ensuring code quality and supporting team members’ professional growth. This dual focus helps create a collaborative, productive environment and fosters both technical excellence and team cohesion.

Job description

Department Description

The Development Team is responsible for designing, building, integrating, supporting, and continuously improving the technology platforms that power Trajan Wealth. This includes internal business applications, client-facing portals, APIs, data platforms, reporting systems, workflow automation, and integrations across the organization.

The Team Lead is a hands-on engineering leader for a team building modern, full-stack applications – primarily a Java and Spring Boot backend with a React (JavaScript/TypeScript) front end. This individual is responsible for the technical direction, quality, and delivery of these platforms while ensuring solutions are scalable, secure, maintainable, and aligned with business objectives. The Team Lead works closely with business stakeholders, executive leadership, and cross-functional teams to deliver high-quality software that supports the continued growth of Trajan Wealth.

The Team Lead serves as both a hands-on technical leader and a people manager – writing and reviewing code, mentoring developers, establishing engineering standards, driving architectural decisions across the Java/Spring Boot services and React front end, and ensuring successful execution of the technology roadmap.

Duties and responsibilitiesLeadership & Team Management
  • Lead the Development Team on a day-to-day basis including standups, quarterly reviews, annual reviews, coaching, mentoring, workload management, and team development.
  • Manage and develop software engineers across multiple disciplines, including full-stack developers, integration engineers, and application developers.
  • Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement.
  • Partner with leadership to establish priorities, resource planning, and technology roadmaps.
Technical Leadership
  • Lead the design, development, implementation, and support of enterprise software solutions, integrations, and digital platforms.
  • Own the overall technical direction and architecture of Trajan Wealth's application ecosystem, including the Java/Spring Boot microservices backend, React front end, and supporting APIs and data stores.
  • Ensure solutions are scalable, secure, reliable, and aligned with business objectives.
  • Establish coding standards, development best practices, documentation standards, and architectural guidelines across the Java and React codebases.
  • Conduct design reviews and provide technical oversight on complex engineering initiatives.
  • Evaluate emerging technologies and recommend solutions that improve efficiency, automation, and scalability.
Application Development
  • Remain hands-on – personally design and build key features across the Spring Boot backend and React front end, not just oversee them.
  • Collaborate with product owners and business stakeholders to gather requirements and translate them into technical solutions.
  • Ensure high-quality software delivery through code reviews, testing strategies, and development standards.
  • Guide development of client-facing applications, internal business systems, workflow automation, and enterprise integrations.
  • Drive modern, full-stack development practices – RESTful and API-first design, microservices, component-based React UIs, automated testing, and cloud-native deployment.
DevOps, Cloud & Operations
  • Establish and manage software development lifecycle (SDLC) processes and DevOps standards.
  • Lead the implementation and maintenance of CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and deployment processes.
  • Promote infrastructure automation, containerization (Docker/Kubernetes), monitoring, observability, and operational excellence.
  • Ensure applications meet uptime, performance, and security requirements.
  • Support production environments, incident management, root cause analysis, and continuous improvement initiatives.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • Understanding of advanced OO software engineering concepts such as SoC, Design Patterns, IoC, DI, P of EAA, etc.
  • 10+ years of overall software development experience building enterprise applications, with a strong foundation in object-oriented design.
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience building backend services in Java and the Spring/Spring Boot framework.
  • 3+ years building modern front-end applications in React (JavaScript/TypeScript), including component architecture and state management.
  • Strong experience designing and consuming RESTful APIs and building microservices-based architectures.
  • Experience with Agile methodologies and tools like Jira
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and leading a team of developers.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and collaborate effectively with other members of the development team
  • Experience with relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, SQL Server) and ORM frameworks such as JPA/Hibernate.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with TypeScript and modern React tooling (hooks, Redux or Context, testing libraries).
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, and with data platforms such as Snowflake.
  • Familiarity with messaging/streaming technologies such as Kafka.
  • Experience with the Atlassian stack (Jira, Confluence, Bitbucket).
  • Background in financial services, wealth management, or another regulated, security-sensitive domain.
  • Experience modernizing or replacing legacy platforms and leading migrations.
Benefits
  • $150,000 to $170,000 base salary plus bonus
  • 401(k) with a matching contribution up to 13%.
  • United Healthcare PPO medical coverage for employees, paid by the company.
  • Delta Dental PPO, United Healthcare Vision, Short Term Disability, Long Term Disability, Life Insurance, and many more voluntary options.
  • Generous holidays and PTO.
  • Future career growth opportunity.
