What You Will Do

The Laboratory Manager is responsible for the management, direction, and supervision of daily operations for both the onsite laboratory and remote clinic lab services. This role demonstrates strong knowledge of laboratory processes, procedures, and best practices, ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements related to specimen collection, processing, handling, and transport in coordination with each supported lab.

Additional responsibilities include:

  • Invest in the professional development of staff, fostering growth, competence, and engagement
  • Serve as a cross-disciplinary resource for laboratory best practices and operational guidance
  • Negotiate and coordinate pricing and service agreements with external laboratory vendors
  • Collaborate with partner organizations on laboratory services, alignment, and strategic initiatives
  • Research and identify opportunities for laboratory service expansion and improvement
  • Partner across departments to ensure laboratory needs are effective met and aligned with organizational goals

The Opportunity

  • Participate in staff supervision, performance evaluation, merit increases and disciplinary action; evaluate staff and teams for continuous safety, quality, professional development and process improvement
  • Provide direct oversight and day-to-day leadership to the laboratory team to promote a sense of cohesiveness and effective team interactions across disciplines while promoting efficient operations and positive patient experience and engagement
  • Serve as a resource for the Laboratory Services Coordinator and Laboratory Services Client Liaison in reference to provider and patient needs or lab concerns which require escalation
  • Establish and maintain relationships with first line referral labs and other laboratories which support diagnostic testing for the treatment and care of patient population
  • Oversight of updates to EMR order modules, collection and handling guidelines, requisitions; educate staff as it relates to modifications
  • Collaborate with physicians and outside groups to coordinate diagnostic tools appropriate to patient needs
  • Participate in system and clinic work groups focused on laboratory workflow development and scalability as the Center grows; revise workflows collaboratively as needed
  • Assist leadership in establishing team member specific goals and participating in the planning and facilitation of IHI goals as assigned
  • Support patient & staff education and/or Clinical Research department as needed
  • Work closely with the Nursing Leadership on clinic operational issues related to revision of policy and procedure, budget, resources, communication, and proactive QI/PI development, implementation, and outcome evaluation

This is an on-site position open to residents of the State of Indiana, and requires daily presence at our Center in Indianapolis, IN. Minimal travel is required based on business or development needs.

Requirements

  • Minimum of Bachelor's degree in science, healthcare, or other related field required
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in hematology/coagulation laboratory operations OR minimum of 5 years of outpatient laboratory coordination experience required
  • All IHI employees are expected to enable multi-factor authentication via their personal smart phone/smart device in order to access IHI systems as a requirement of the role. 


Knowledge Requirements:

  • Correct grammar, spelling, punctuation and medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Knowledge of CQI principles, practices, methods, and tools
  • Knowledge of CLIA/CLIA Waiver, CAP, CDC, MASC, and WHF guidelines
  • Knowledge of laboratory science and its application to the hematology-oncology specialty
  • Knowledge of pain management and coordination of toxicology as it pertains to patient pain contract requirements and the Indiana "First Do No Harm" legislation
