Highlights of the job

We're hiring a permanent, full-time Engineer, Wastewater Treatment Planning based in Edmonton, AB. Reporting to the Manager, WWTP Strategies, you will play a key role in supporting the long-term planning, sustainability, and capital investment strategies for Edmonton's wastewater treatment facilities, including the Gold Bar Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and Clover Bar Resource Recovery Facility (CBRRF).

As the Engineer, Wastewater Treatment Planning, you will provide engineering and project management expertise to support integrated resource planning, capital planning, process improvement initiatives, stakeholder engagement activities, business case development, and sustainability projects. You will collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to ensure strategic planning initiatives support the reliable, efficient, and sustainable operation of Edmonton's wastewater treatment infrastructure.

What you'd be responsible for

In the role of Engineer, Wastewater Treatment Planning, you will have the following key accountabilities (but are not limited to these):

  • Support long-term planning initiatives for Edmonton wastewater treatment facilities, including integrated resource planning, capital planning, and Performance-Based Regulation (PBR) submissions.
  • Develop and prioritize projects that support operational, regulatory, sustainability, and investment objectives by partnering with operations, engineering, and corporate stakeholders.
  • Prepare and contribute to planning documents, technical memoranda, business cases, conceptual designs, design basis memoranda, and capital planning reports.
  • Analyze operational and asset performance data to identify opportunities for optimization, risk mitigation, and future investment planning.
  • Lead procurement activities for external engineering and planning studies and manage consultant relationships to ensure high-quality deliverables.
  • Review technical work completed by consultants and support the successful completion and implementation of planning recommendations.
  • Support stakeholder engagement initiatives and collaborate with internal teams to communicate planning, operational, and capital program updates.
  • Support environmental, social, and governance (ESG) initiatives, including greenhouse gas reduction projects, facility resilience planning, grant funding opportunities, and sustainability studies.
  • Support capital project development, project handovers, and performance validation activities to inform future planning decisions.
  • Collaborate across EPCOR and with external organizations to advance strategic initiatives, evaluate partnership opportunities, and support continuous improvement.

What's required to be successful

Education and Credentials

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering. Civil, Environmental, Mechanical, or Chemical Engineering disciplines are preferred.
  • With aDegreewe require:
    • Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) or eligibility to obtain registration with APEGA, or
    • Engineer in Training (EIT) with relevant experience will be considered
  • Master's degree or additional related training is considered an asset.

Experience

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in process design, asset management, engineering planning, and/or project management.
    • Individuals with less than the required years of experience may also be considered for this role.
  • Experience within a municipal, industrial, or utility operating environment is preferred.
  • Experience supporting capital planning, business case development, engineering studies, or infrastructure planning projects is considered an asset.
  • Experience working in wastewater treatment, water treatment, resource recovery, or other process-driven facilities is considered an asset.

Technical & Professional Skills

  • Strong knowledge of engineering design principles, asset management practices, and infrastructure planning.
  • Ability to interpret and review multidisciplinary engineering drawings including civil, mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, and process documentation.
  • Experience with project management throughout the full project lifecycle, from initiation through close-out.
  • Strong analytical skills, including experience conducting cost-benefit analyses, economic evaluations, and business case development.
  • Experience developing strategic plans, technical reports, and project justifications.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and Microsoft 365 applications, including Excel, Power BI, SharePoint, Teams, Project, and Visio.
  • Strong verbal, written, presentation, and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities and competing deadlines.
