The Role

Reporting to the Manager Development and Engineering Services, the Project Development Engineer is responsible for initial project design of new projects, existing facility upgrades, debottlenecking and process improvements for Gibson's operations in both the US and Canada. Project Development includes problem definition, project scope definition, design, stakeholder engagement, and transition to the project execution team.

The ideal canidate is someone who is naturally curious, comfortable navigating ambiguity, and able to translate complex technical concepts into practical business recommendations. The ideal candidate enjoys solving open-ended problems, challenging assumptions, and collaborating with stakeholders to determine the best path forward - even when the outcome may be that a project doesn't proceed. 

What You'll Do

  • Coordinate or complete project development activities (up to project sanction/FID) for projects at or in support of Gibson's core assets (terminals, pipelines, and processing facilities).
  • Specific activities include:
    • Problem definition, in conjunction with business development and marketing teams.
    • Preliminary scoping and high-level cost estimating (unclassified) for option selection and opportunity prioritization.
    • Completing development of executable scopes on simple/low-risk opportunities, including option selection, early design deliverables (design brief, PFD, plot plan, etc.) and Class 5 cost estimate.
    • Completing development of executable scopes on more complex/moderate-risk opportunities, including option selection, early design deliverables (redlined P&IDs, hydraulic calculations, instrument sizing, design brief, etc.) and Class 4 cost estimate.
    • Coordinating (scope development, schedule management, document review, etc.) Front End Engineering Design (FEED) and pre-FEED studies, including fully developed DBM packages and Class 3 or 4 estimates, developed by third party engineering contractors.
  • Conduct reviews with project stakeholders, including executive-level stakeholders, to ensure internal and external customer's needs and expectations are addressed.
  • Complete project governance/technical due diligence and preparation of handover documentation (Project Brief, etc.) to execution team
  • Provide engineering support to projects post-sanction (up to IFR drawing review, 30% model review, and HAZOP) to maintain continuity of scope.
  • Develop and/or evaluate process simulations, heat and material balances, process flow diagrams (PFDs) and piping and instrumentation diagrams (P&IDs).Develop and foster strong, positive working relationships with internal/external stakeholders (Operations, Marketing, Commercial Development, Customers, Engineering contractors, etc.).Provide training, guidance, and mentorship in the development of the capacity and capability of in-house engineers, including junior facility, operations, and development engineers.
  • Demonstrate a personal commitment and proactive approach to Environment, Health & Safety (EH&S) through participation in all applicable EH&S programs and ensures safe operation of the branch, team or unit and compliance with all Company EH&S policies and procedures.
  • May perform other duties as assigned.

What You'll Bring to the Role

  • Degree in Engineering from a university program that is recognized by the Canadian Engineering Accreditation Board or is a related program that the APEGA Board of Examiners considers to be equivalent.
  • Ability to register with APEGA as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) is required.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in engineering of multiple facility types with a preference for experience in early phases of design (scoping through FEED).
  • Understanding of process safety principles, industry codes, standards (such as API and ASME) and regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to effectively manage numerous concurrent and varied expectations with prioritization by supervisor or senior colleague.
  • Exhibit innovation when developing and evaluating alternate solutions.
  • Exhibit critical thinking when assessing new technologies and problems which may not have a clear or known solution.
  • Ability to foresee potential issues or problems through strong planning and organizing skills.
  • Demonstrates excellent interpersonal, organizational, communication and analytical skills.
