What does a design engineer manager do?

A Design Engineer Manager leads a team of design engineers in developing, testing, and refining products or systems. They oversee project timelines, coordinate with other departments, and ensure that design solutions meet technical, quality, and budget requirements. Additionally, they provide technical guidance, mentor their team, and often contribute to the hiring and training processes. Their role is crucial for bridging the gap between engineering and management, ensuring that projects are delivered efficiently and meet organizational goals.

How does a design engineer manager balance technical project responsibilities with team leadership duties?

As a Design Engineer Manager, balancing technical tasks and team leadership is essential. You are often responsible for overseeing project timelines, ensuring design quality, and addressing technical challenges, while also mentoring team members, conducting performance reviews, and fostering collaboration. Effective delegation, regular team meetings, and clear communication help manage these dual responsibilities. Many Design Engineer Managers find success by setting aside dedicated time for both technical reviews and one-on-one sessions with their team, ensuring neither aspect is neglected.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a design engineer manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Design Engineer Manager, you need a strong background in engineering principles, project management, and leadership, often supported by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering and relevant management experience. Familiarity with CAD software, product lifecycle management (PLM) systems, and certifications like PMP or Six Sigma are typically valuable. Excellent communication, problem-solving, and team-building skills help you motivate and guide multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure effective project execution, innovation, and the successful delivery of complex engineering solutions.

Job description

Job Title: Design Engineer / Product Engineer – Automotive Audio and ElectronicsJob Description

This role focuses on the design, packaging, and integration of automotive audio and electronic components, with a strong emphasis on vehicle layout development, supplier coordination, and cross-functional collaboration. The engineer supports the full product development process from concept to production, ensuring that components such as speakers, switches, brackets, and related electronics meet design, packaging, and implementation requirements.

Responsibilities
  • Support the design and integration of speakers, switches, brackets, and other vehicle electronic components into automotive platforms.
  • Develop component layout proposals and conduct packaging studies using CATIA to ensure proper fit, function, and manufacturability.
  • Coordinate closely with body, interior, styling, and supplier teams to confirm design feasibility and alignment with vehicle requirements.
  • Create and maintain parts lists, support variation management activities, and track component implementation throughout the development cycle.
  • Participate in concept-to-production development activities, contributing engineering input at each phase of the project.
  • Review supplier proposals and technical documentation, and provide clear engineering feedback to guide design and implementation decisions.
  • Communicate technical concerns, risks, and trade-offs to internal stakeholders and support informed decision-making across departments.
  • Manage ownership of assigned parts, ensuring timely progress, issue resolution, and alignment with project milestones.
  • Work independently with minimal supervision while coordinating project activities internally and externally.
  • Support project management and coordination tasks, including aligning schedules, deliverables, and expectations with suppliers and internal teams.
Essential Skills
  • 5+ years of automotive product engineering experience, specifically supporting audio and electronic components.
  • Proficiency with CATIA for 3D design, component layout, and packaging studies (advanced surfacing not required).
  • Hands-on experience with component packaging and vehicle layout development.
  • Demonstrated experience coordinating with suppliers and cross-functional teams such as body, interior, and styling.
  • Strong mechanical design background with the ability to interpret and review design drawings.
  • Proven ability to manage part ownership and drive tasks independently with minimal supervision.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively across functions and communicate technical issues clearly.
  • Experience supporting components through the full product development cycle, from concept to production, is strongly preferred.
  • Experience in project management and coordination with internal stakeholders and external suppliers.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Mechanical design experience in automotive environments.
  • Experience in supplier management and coordination throughout the product development process.
  • background in development of speakers, switches, brackets, or similar automotive electronic components.
  • Ability to balance multiple projects and priorities while maintaining attention to detail.
  • Comfort working in a highly collaborative environment with frequent cross-functional interactions.
Work Environment

This position is based in an office setting with no lab or manufacturing work required. The role is heavily coordination-focused, with approximately 80% of the time dedicated to working with suppliers and internal stakeholders such as interior, body, and styling teams. Around 20% of the role involves design activities or drawing reviews, particularly at the beginning of projects when layouts and packaging concepts are being established. The environment emphasizes professional communication, structured project coordination, and the use of CATIA and related engineering tools to support design and integration activities.
