Senior Database Administrator
We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Database Administrator to lead the administration, performance, reliability, and evolution of our enterprise database platforms across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments.
This is a mission-critical role requiring deep technical expertise, operational ownership, and the ability to work independently while collaborating closely with our Managed Service Provider (MSP) and internal development teams. The successful candidate will serve as the primary internal database authority supporting business-critical applications.
Environment Overview:
  • On-Premises, Cloud, and Hybrid infrastructure
  • Development, Test, Staging, and Production environments
  • Databases ranging from 400GB to 1TB+, depending on supported applications
  • Kubernetes (K8s) practices utilized for application deployment
  • CI/CD-driven release processes
  • 24/7 on-call support shared with Managed Service Provider
  • Security aligned with cybersecurity best practices

Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Enterprise Database Administration
  • Administers and provides support for Oracle database, Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL) and database management system (Informix)
  • Manages installations, upgrades, patching, migrations, and lifecycle management across all environments
  • Supports database integration within CI/CD deployment pipelines
  • Coordinates database changes aligned with Kubernetes-based application deployments

Development Collaboration & Schema Design
  • Partners closely with application development teams to design and enhance database schemas
  • Reviews and optimizes data models to align with industry best practices and performance standards
  • Provides guidance on indexing strategies, normalization/denormalization approaches, and query optimization
  • Supports database design reviews during application development lifecycle
  • Ensures schema changes are properly versioned and aligned with CI/CD processes
  • Promotes scalable, maintainable, and secure database architecture standards

High Availability & Disaster Recovery
  • Designs, implements, and maintains high-availability configurations
  • Manages backup, restore, and disaster recovery strategies
  • Performs routine recovery validation testing
  • Supports failover and business continuity planning

Performance & Optimization
  • Conducts advanced performance tuning and optimization
  • Analyzes execution plans, indexing strategies, and workload performance
  • Proactively monitors capacity and scalability requirements
  • Optimizes databases supporting large-scale (400GB-1TB+) workloads

Security & Safety
  • Implements database security hardening standards
  • Manages user roles, access controls, and permissions
  • Supports patching and vulnerability remediation
  • Ensures encryption and secure configuration alignment with cybersecurity policies
  • Prioritizes health and safety by adhering to policies, processes, and maintaining safe practices at all times

MSP Collaboration & Operational Leadership
  • Serves as the primary internal liaison to the Managed Service Provider
  • Coordinates escalations, patch cycles, and infrastructure-level changes
  • Validates technical recommendations and ensures SLA adherence
  • Provides oversight and technical direction for database initiatives

Automation & Process Improvement
  • Develops and maintains automation scripts (PowerShell, shell scripting, or similar)
  • Supports change management processes across environments
  • Contributes to continuous improvement initiatives within CI/CD workflows
  • Maintains detailed documentation and operational standards
  • Takes on additional duties as assigned to support the team and organization, including maintaining the ability to participate in a 24/7 on-call rotation

Additional Qualifications/Responsibilities
Experience:
  • 7+ years of hands-on enterprise DBA experience (required)
  • Experience managing multiple environments (Dev/Test/Staging/Production) and working within a hybrid infrastructure including on-premises and cloud (required)
  • Experience supporting databases in 400GB-1TB+ range and environments utilizing Kubernetes and CI/CD practices (required)
  • Experience collaborating with Development teams on schema design/optimization, as well as with Managed Services Providers (required)
  • Bachelor's degree in information technology or related field (required)

Preferred:
  • Experience with Informix database administration
  • Experience with database modernization initiatives
  • Exposure to containerized or cloud-native database integrations
  • Advanced scripting/automation experience
Competencies:
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to effectively communicate with internal and external stakeholders
  • Ability to manage projects and process improvement initiatives; demonstrating sound personal judgement and a strong sense of accountability
  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality
  • Strong expertise in Oracle database and Microsoft SQL Server (MSSQL)
  • Strong knowledge of high availability and disaster recovery, performance tuning and optimization, backup and recovery strategies and security hardening
  • Ability to work independently and within a senior-level capacity
  • Ability to detect and troubleshoot the Oracle database server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention
  • Strong knowledge of backups, restores, recovery models, database shrink operations, DBCC commands, clustering, database mirroring and replication
  • Strong knowledge of indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration and patching; understanding of statistics, how indexes are stored, and how they can be created and managed effectively
  • Ability to write and troubleshoot database queries and design (stored procedures, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints, etc.)
  • Strong documentation skills for processes and procedures (e.g. creating KBs, runbooks, topology, etc.)
  • Regular and predictable attendance to perform the functions and requirements of this role
