Job Title: School Health Assistant / Health Aide
Reports To: Building Principal (Administrative) & District Registered Nurse (Clinical Supervision)
Position PurposeThe School Health Assistant supports student achievement by maintaining a safe and healthy environment. Working under the clinical direction and delegation of the District Registered Nurse (RN), this position provides routine illness and injury management, administers student medications, manages medical documentation, and assists with state-mandated health screenings. [Essential Job Functions & Delegated Duties

  • Illness & Injury Management: Provide basic authorized first aid, triage daily student health room visits, and manage isolation protocols for communicable diseases following standard local public health authority (LPHA) protocols.
  • Medication Administration: Administer and precisely document prescribed daily and emergency student medications (including epinephrine and glucagon injections) in strict compliance with Oregon legislative requirements and district policies.
  • Nursing Task Delegation: Execute student-specific, delegated health care tasks for medically fragile students or those with chronic health conditions under the precise training, authorization, and clinical oversight of the District RN.
  • Health Screenings & Tracking: Assist in organizing and executing annual mandated student health screenings, including vision, dental, and head lice checks.
  • Record Keeping & Compliance: Audit, update, and maintain meticulous electronic health records, student daily logs, and state-mandated immunization records using the district student information system
  • Communication: Act as a central point of contact for the health room; communicate changes in student health status promptly to parents, administrators, and the District RN while strictly maintaining student confidentiality (FERPA/HIPAA). [1,


Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications & Requirements

  • Age: Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) as required by the Oregon Department of Education (OAR 581-037-0030).
  • Certifications (Required at hire or within a designated window):
    • Current, valid First Aid and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) / Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certification.
    • Completion of Oregon-mandated training regarding Bloodborne Pathogens (HIV/HBV) and child abuse reporting within 30 days of hire.
  • Background Clearance: Must successfully pass an Oregon Department of Education criminal history background clearance, fingerprint check, and pre-employment drug screening.
  • Skills: Proficiency with basic computer technology for electronic data entry, excellent multi-tasking abilities, and the capacity to remain calm and apply good judgment during medical emergencies.

Physical & Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in a school health room environment with frequent exposure to blood, bodily fluids, and communicable diseases.
  • Requires the physical ability to bend, kneel, squat, push, pull, move quickly in emergencies, stand or walk for large portions of the day, and lift up to 35 lbs
