Your role at a glance

The Data Center Technician Apprentice is an entry level position that will work closely with Data Center Technicians to further develop and enhance their knowledge base & skills set. This position will assist in ensuring the operational integrity and regulatory compliance of the data center electrical, mechanical, plumbing, control and fire life safety systems is maintained.
This position will also be responsible to effectively carry out the duties and the processes that maximize customer uptime in the most cost-effective way. The Data Center Apprentice is expected to recognize data center problems and ensure they are quickly identified and properly escalated and if possible repaired quickly, provide oversight of contractors to deliver quality services, and that internal customer demands are met. The Data Center Technician Apprentice will develop their skills with hands on work, training, performing requested tasks, assisting in building rounds and maintenance.

What we are looking for

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Operate, monitor, maintain, and respond to abnormal conditions in multiple facility systems, areas include: Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing, Fire Life Safety, and Building Monitoring and Control.
    • Mechanical areas of responsibility include: data center cooling solutions, to include chilled water systems and components, various HVAC systems such as roof top units, split units, DX, CRAC/CRAH units, and humidification systems, as well as Kyoto Cooling if so equipped.
    • Electrical areas of responsibility include: electrical/critical power distribution from the Utility/Generator main entrance switchgear through the UPS systems and distribution out to the customer load, and include load bank operations.
    • Plumbing areas of responsibility include: all water supply piping , fixtures, meters, backflow preventers, water heaters, boilers and plumbing fixtures, such as drinking fountains, sinks, sink drain, traps, trap primers, urinals and commodes, and also internal and roof drain systems.
    • Control system areas of responsibility include: electrical and mechanical controls systems operations and expected user knowledge.
    • Fire Life Safety area of responsibility include: wet sprinkler systems and pre-action sprinkler systems as well as their associated fire detection devices and associated control system.
  • Work with contractors and consultants for all system expansions, corrections and upgrades
  • Work with the CFOps Data Center Technicians to determine the buildings maintenance requirements for mechanical, electrical, plumbing, control and fire life safety systems
  • Assists the CFOps Data Center Technicians to track, document, and complete an aggressive preventive and predictive maintenance schedule
  • Ensure data center operates at maximum operational efficiency, including analyzing existing operating conditions, recommending new approaches to operations and/or technologies, and improving overall efficiency and cost reduction. Assist with the management of data center systems to avoid unplanned, customer-impacting events
  • Assist with the management of data floor and back of house/hotel load mechanical and electrical loading capacity thereby ensuring best use of available power and that the cooling system is operating at its highest efficiency
  • Perform data trending / tracking and analyze the data
  • Provide feedback to DCO Engineering on the effectiveness of existing standards and processes
  • Develop technical writing skills in regard to the research & development of procedures for preventative or corrective maintenance activities.
  • Install hot and cold aisle isolation barriers.
  • Maintain client cages on the data floor.
  • Order, track and restock facility related consumable items and parts ensuring performance at the lowest possible cost.
  • Regular, predictable Attendance is essential for satisfactory performance.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS & ABILITIES

  • Has a demonstrated technical ability applicable to data center operations as well as, innovative thinking cross functionally, including integrated systems and information technology (IT) experience
  • Entry level knowledge of the electrical and mechanical systems used in a data center environment, including, but not limited to the following: electrical distribution and layout, transformers, PLC's, Generators, Switchgear, UPS systems, STS', ATS' PDU's, Chilled Water Systems, CRAC/CRAH's, Pre-Action Sprinkler Systems
  • Entry level knowledge of NEC, NFPA 70E, NFPA 72, NFPA 25, and compliance issues as well as building codes in regard to fire life safety
  • Entry level knowledge in industrial safety best practices (i.e. lockout/tag out, arc flash protection, OSHA and state regulations)
  • Ability to rapidly learn and use PC based, integrated critical monitoring and control systems
  • Proficient with computers to include the utilization of Microsoft programs such as Word, Excel, Power Point and Outlook.
  • Ability to work in a team environment.
  • Ability to work in a high stress, fast paced environment with shifting priorities.
  • Ability to respond to emergency situations at the data center.
  • Ability to work outside normal business hours, including weekends, late nights, holidays and on-call support.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with verbal, visual and listening skills
  • Good problem-solving skills.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Associate of Science in Technology or equivalent education and/or work experience desired.
  • CPR/First Aid and NFPA70E Certification obtained during employment
  • Possession of an OSHA approved forklift certification or the ability to obtain one after employment.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Primarily walking, standing, and bending with some sitting.
  • Close visual work on a computer terminal.
  • Dexterity of hands and fingers to operate any required equipment as well as to operate computer keyboard, mouse, and other technical instruments.
  • Able to lift heavy equipment, up to 50 pounds

WORK CONDITIONS

  • Data Center environment with varying temperatures and loud noises
  • Potential extensive daily usage of workstation or computer.
  • Potential that role may require rotating shift work

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  • Must work on-site; no telecommuting permitted.
  • Must wear leather close-toed boots with a solid rubber sole
  • "A valid driver's license is required as employees will need to support tasks in nearby buildings and utilize company vehicles to complete assignments."

Compensation Pay Range

This position requires work to be done onsite at a data center facility and may require use of a personal mobile device. A monthly stipend will be provided to cover expenses incurred for using a personal device, if applicable.
NTT Global Data Centers Americas, Inc. offers competitive compensation based on experience, education, and location. Hourly base salary for this position is $27.50 - $39.28 and is eligible for overtime pay in accordance to local state and federal 'Wage and Hour' requirements.
All regular full-time employees are eligible for an annual bonus; payout is dependent upon individual and company performance.
