What are some common challenges Data Analysts face when working with large datasets, and how are they typically addressed?

Data Analysts often encounter challenges such as data quality issues, missing or inconsistent values, and slow processing times when handling large datasets. These challenges are typically addressed by implementing data cleaning routines, using advanced data management tools, and leveraging programming languages like Python or R for efficient data manipulation. Collaboration with database administrators and IT teams is also common to ensure data integrity and optimize data storage solutions. Staying updated with best practices in data wrangling and visualization helps Data Analysts deliver accurate and actionable insights.

Is 40 too late for data science?

A Data Analyst role is accessible at any age, including at 40, as the field values skills like statistical analysis, programming, and data visualization. Many professionals transition into data science or analytics later in their careers by gaining relevant certifications and experience, making age less of a barrier than skill set and continuous learning.

Will AI replace a data analyst?

AI tools can automate routine data processing and basic analysis tasks, but data analysts are essential for interpreting complex data, making strategic decisions, and communicating insights. The role of a data analyst involves critical thinking, domain knowledge, and skills in tools like SQL and Excel, which are not easily replaced by AI. Therefore, while AI may augment the work of data analysts, it is unlikely to fully replace the role in the near future.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Data Analyst, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Data Analyst, you need strong analytical skills, proficiency in statistics, and a relevant degree such as in mathematics, statistics, or computer science. Familiarity with data analysis tools like SQL, Excel, Python or R, and experience with visualization platforms such as Tableau or Power BI are typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help analysts interpret data insights and present findings clearly to stakeholders. These skills are crucial for transforming raw data into actionable business insights that drive informed decision-making.

Job description

Data Analyst - Aon Affinity
Do you enjoy turning complex data into clear, actionable insights for the business?
Are you excited by the challenge of solving real-world problems on a global scale?
Join Aon Affinity as a Data Analyst and help build the future of our data and analytics program!
This is an in-office role based in Aon's Bloomington, MN office.
Aon is in the business of better decisions
At Aon, we build decisions for the better to protect and enrich the lives of people around the world. As an organization, we are united through trust as one inclusive team, and we are passionate about helping our colleagues and clients succeed.
What the day will look like
This role involves supporting data and analytics for a blend of legacy and modern systems at Aon Affinity. You will engage directly with business units to provide data solutions and insights. Leading small project teams to build practical analytics solutions will be part of your responsibilities. On any day, you may meet with business leaders to understand their analytics needs, define solutions to analytics problems, or build algorithms, data pipelines, and dashboards using tools like Databricks and Power BI. You will also assist other analysts by reviewing and contributing to their projects.
  • Partner with business, marketing, IT, and other collaborators to understand business needs, build analytics strategies, and develop high-value analytics solutions. Perform business analysis to define requirements, prioritize work, and translate business questions into actionable analytics and reporting.
  • Compose and build Python-based algorithms and data pipelines. Build interactive dashboards so that your results reach decision makers.
  • Provide thought leadership to business units by educating them about advances in analytics and helping them apply those advances to practical business problems. Serve as a subject-matter guide for the rest of the analytics team in an analytics field such as Python, machine learning, Databricks, or solution pattern development.

How this opportunity is different
  • Work on projects across various analytics, technical, and business domains-expect to tackle a significantly different project every year or two.
  • Work on full-stack problems: analysts usually capture requirements, develop the solution, implement data and analytics components, and ensure results meet internal partner needs.
  • Aon is a leading company in assisting clients worldwide to handle their most significant risks. Whatever drives you-be it a location, a technology, or a social issue-Aon is likely a front runner in that area.

Skills and experience that will lead to success
  • Intermediate Python and SQL skills are required, with a minimum of 5+ years of experience preferred, including hands-on work modifying and maintaining Python-based ETL pipelines. You will be expected to write queries in real time to support stakeholder discussions and use tools such as Databricks and Power BI to deliver data and analytics outputs.
  • Experience applying machine learning and other sophisticated analytics techniques, and presenting findings in a clear, compelling way that develops real-world value for internal clients.
  • Strong business analysis skills, able to work independently with business units to develop analytics strategy, identify high-value opportunities, and build effective solutions. Foundational project and product ownership skills include managing tasks and timelines for small projects and acting as Product Owner for data-focused work in an agile, distributed, and matrixed setting.
  • Preferred qualifications include experience in the insurance sector, particularly small business P&C brokerage. Familiarity with GraphQL and D&B Hoovers or comparable small business data is valued. Expert knowledge in areas like Databricks, Python, generative AI, DevOps for analytics, business analysis, P&C analytics, or third-party data sources such as D&B is also desirable.

Education
Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in a quantitative field (such as Data Science, Computer Science, Mathematics, Statistics, or similar).
For positions in San Francisco and Los Angeles, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction record in accordance with local Fair Chance ordinances.
Aon is not accepting unsolicited resumes from search firms for this position. If you are a search firm, you will not be compensated in any way for your submission of a candidate, even if Aon hires that candidate.
Nothing in this job description restricts management's right to assign or reassign duties and responsibilities to this job at any time.
The salary range for this position (intended for U.S. applicants) is $93,500 - $120,000 annually. The actual salary will vary based on applicant's education, experience, skills, and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data. The salary may also be adjusted based on applicant's geographic location.
This position is eligible to participate in one of Aon's annual incentive plans to receive an annual discretionary bonus in addition to base salary. The amount of any bonus varies and is subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable incentive plan.
A summary of all the benefits offered for this position:
