What is a customer service representative?

A Customer Service Representative is a professional who interacts with customers on behalf of a company to provide information, resolve complaints, and ensure customer satisfaction. Their responsibilities can include answering questions, processing orders, handling returns, and addressing any issues customers may have with products or services. Customer Service Representatives may communicate with customers through various channels, such as phone, email, live chat, or in person. They play a crucial role in building positive relationships between businesses and their clients.

What are customer service jobs?

Customer service jobs are positions at companies and organizations where you address any customer complaint or problem, provide technical help when customers are having issues with their product or service, and seek a resolution to any issues either through your own ability to solve the problem or by passing on complaints and issues to your superiors. Some customer service jobs are in call centers, while other professionals work at customer service desks in department stores or grocery stores. Your duties in these positions can vary based on the industry and the location. For example, a software support specialist at a call center has a very different job than a help desk associate at a department store.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a customer service representative, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Customer Service Representative, you need strong communication skills, problem-solving abilities, and typically a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, phone systems, and ticketing platforms is often required. Patience, active listening, and resilience are standout soft skills for effectively handling diverse customer interactions. These skills are vital for resolving issues efficiently, ensuring customer satisfaction, and maintaining a positive company reputation.

What are some common challenges customer service representatives face, and how are they typically supported in overcoming them?

Customer service representatives often encounter challenges such as handling difficult or upset customers, managing a high volume of inquiries, and staying updated on changing company policies or products. Most organizations provide thorough onboarding, ongoing training, and access to knowledge bases or support tools to help reps address these challenges. Additionally, strong teamwork and regular feedback from supervisors are common practices to ensure customer service staff feel supported and able to succeed in their roles.

Job description

Customer Service Representative (CSR)

Fischer Services | Join a Team That Truly Cares

At Fischer Services, we know that when a customer calls us, it's usually because something isn't working the way it should. Their plumbing is leaking, their heating system stopped working, their electrical issue can't wait, or they simply need help from someone they can trust.

That's why we're looking for more than just a Customer Service Representative.

We're looking for someone who genuinely cares about people.

Someone who can bring calm to a stressful situation, listen with empathy, and make customers feel confident that they've called the right company.

If you're someone who loves helping others, thrives in a fast-paced environment, and enjoys being the friendly voice that keeps everything moving, we'd love to meet you.

What You'll Do

As a Customer Service Representative, you'll serve as the first point of contact for our customers and play a critical role in creating an exceptional customer experience.

Responsibilities include:

  • Answering inbound customer calls with professionalism, empathy, and urgency
  • Making outbound calls to customers regarding scheduling, follow-up, and service needs
  • Scheduling appointments and coordinating technician calendars
  • Dispatching technicians and managing daily route adjustments
  • Providing updates and communication between customers and field teams
  • Assisting with administrative and clerical tasks as needed
  • Maintaining accurate customer records and documentation
  • Supporting multiple departments while keeping customer satisfaction top of mind
  • Helping ensure every customer interaction reflects our commitment to service excellence

What Makes Someone Successful in This Role?

We're looking for people who naturally:

  • Enjoy helping others
  • Stay calm under pressure
  • Communicate clearly and professionally
  • Show empathy and compassion
  • Pay attention to details
  • Thrive in a busy, team-oriented environment
  • Adapt quickly when priorities change
  • Take ownership and follow through

You don't have to know everything about plumbing, heating, electrical, or restoration services—we can teach that. We can't teach a genuine desire to help people.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous customer service, call center, dispatching, scheduling, or administrative experience
  • Strong phone and communication skills
  • Comfortable using computers and multiple software programs simultaneously; experience with Service Titan preferred
  • Excellent organizational and multitasking abilities
  • Experience in home services, construction, trades, or service industries is a plus
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn

Why Fischer Services?

We believe great customer service starts with great people.

When you join Fischer Services, you'll become part of a team that supports one another, celebrates wins together, and takes pride in helping customers through some of their most stressful moments.

We offer:

  • Competitive pay
  • Medical, dental, and vision benefits
  • Paid time off and paid holidays
  • 401(k) with company match
  • Career growth opportunities
  • Ongoing training and development
  • A supportive, family-oriented culture
  • A fast-paced environment where no two days are the same

The Opportunity

If you're looking for a position where you can make a real difference, build meaningful customer relationships, and be part of a team that genuinely cares about people, we'd love to hear from you.

Come be the voice that helps customers feel taken care of when they need it most.

Fischer Services is an Equal Opportunity Employer and values diversity in the workplace.
