Job description

Joliet Public Library is looking for a full-time and experienced Librarian
Cataloger, who is creative, dependable, detail-oriented, enjoys teamwork,
flexible, focused, forward thinking, highly motivated, and must have a great
sense of humor.
Joliet, the fourth largest city in Illinois, is home to a culturally diverse
population of 151,837 residents. Joliet Public Library has 2 branches to serve
our growing community. The Technical Services Department is situated in
our Ottawa Street Building. We offer excellent benefits including 11 paid
holidays, 12 sick days, and 5 weeks of vacation per year. Participation in the
Illinois Municipal Retirement Fund is included as well as medical, dental, and

MLIS from an ALA-accredited program is required with recent cataloging
experiences. Knowledge of Spanish is a plus.

MLIS students with 2 years of relevant cataloging experiences will be

  • Performs original and copy cataloging of print, AV and other library materials as assigned according to national, state, local and consortium standards and guidelines.

  • Accurately uses MARC formats, Dewey Decimal Classification (DDC), RDA, LCSH, LCGFT and other specialized methods, controlled vocabularies, or standards.

  • Assigns classification and call numbers to library materials.

  • Maintains bibliographic and item level information in local database, and perform quality control of all records as necessary for all library materials.

  • Keeps informed of current library trends, and new developments in cataloging.

  • Stays up to date with cataloging issues, standards, and documentation.

  • Actively participates in activities of professional organizations by attending workshops, seminars, and meetings relating to areas of responsibility. Brings this knowledge back to the library by sharing information with and training other staff.

  • Re-catalogs or reclassifies older materials as requested.

  • Collaborates with library public service staffs to provide improved patron access to the catalog.

  • Maintains documentation of local cataloging practices.

  • Performs collection development responsibilities for focused area(s) under the direction of Technical Services Manager.

  • Participates in departmental initiatives and helps facilitate departmental projects and goals.

  • Prepares statistical reports on a monthly, annually and as-needed basis.

  • Provides backup and support for all functions in the department as needed.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.
