What are CPRS Recovery specialists?

CPRS Recovery specialists, or Certified Peer Recovery Specialists, are individuals with lived experience in recovery from mental health or substance use disorders who are trained to support others on their recovery journey. They use their personal experiences, combined with specialized training, to provide guidance, advocacy, and encouragement to peers facing similar challenges. Their role often includes mentoring, sharing resources, assisting with goal setting, and helping individuals navigate recovery services. CPRS Recovery specialists work in various settings such as treatment centers, community organizations, and hospitals.

What are some common challenges faced by Certified Peer Recovery Specialists (CPRS) when supporting individuals in recovery?

Certified Peer Recovery Specialists often encounter challenges such as managing emotional boundaries, addressing relapse situations, and navigating complex support needs of individuals in recovery. It's important to maintain self-care and seek supervision or peer support when needed. Additionally, CPRS professionals work collaboratively with clinical teams and community resources, balancing empathy with professional responsibilities to ensure effective support for those in recovery.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS), and why are they important?

To thrive as a Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS), you need lived experience in recovery, completion of a state-approved peer support training program, and a relevant certification. Familiarity with electronic documentation systems and case management tools is often required to track progress and communicate with care teams. Strong interpersonal communication, active listening, and empathy help build trust and motivate clients through their recovery journeys. These skills are crucial for providing effective peer support, fostering hope, and promoting sustained recovery in individuals facing substance use or mental health challenges.

Job description

Description:

Good News Home provides trauma-informed, faith-centered residential treatment and recovery support for women overcoming substance use and co-occurring mental health challenges. Our team is committed to compassion, accountability, and empowering women to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope.

We are seeking a dedicated Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) / Case Manager to join our clinical and recovery support team. This role provides direct peer support and case management services to women in both our Residential Treatment Facility and our Sober Living Home, The Butterfly House.

Position Summary

The Certified Peer Recovery Specialist / Case Manager provides recovery-oriented support services through lived experience, motivational engagement, and strengths-based case management. This position supports women across two program settingsโ€”the Residential Treatment Center and The Butterfly Houseโ€”ensuring continuity of care as clients transition through different stages of recovery.

The role includes assessing client needs, coordinating essential services, supporting discharge planning, and ensuring that all services align with treatment goals and Good News Home's holistic recovery model. The CPRS/Case Manager must be able to share personal recovery experiences appropriately and develop authentic, supportive peer-to-peer relationships.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide one-on-one peer support, mentorship, and recovery coaching to clients in both the Residential Treatment Facility and The Butterfly House.

  • Assist clients in developing individualized recovery plans and long-term goals, identifying strengths and areas for growth.
  • Facilitate recovery-focused groups, workshops, and peer-led activities across both program locations.
  • Support clients in appointments (medical, legal, housing, etc.) and advocate on their behalf when appropriate.
  • Coordinate essential services and ensure timely delivery of supports outlined in the treatment plan.
  • Transport clients between program locations, appointments, and community resources using company vehicles. Both program sites are located in the same town and are only minutes apart.
  • Maintain complete, accurate documentation in Electronic Health Records (EHR) and NJSAMS.
  • Read daily logs and integrate relevant information into client interactions and support strategies.
  • Provide recovery education across all phases: pre-recovery engagement, initiation, stabilization, and sustained recovery maintenance.
  • Maintain contact with clients after discharge to support long-term recovery and re-engagement if needed.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff, nursing, and residential leadership to support integrated care and treatment planning.
  • Uphold confidentiality standards, including HIPAA and 42 CFR Part 2.
  • Model healthy recovery behaviors, boundaries, and professionalism at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director.
Requirements:
  • Certified Peer Recovery Specialist (CPRS) credential required (New Jersey).
  • Minimum 2 years of sustained recovery from substance use disorder.
  • Experience working in residential treatment, behavioral health, or recovery support preferred.
  • Knowledge of NJSAMS and Electronic Health Records (EHR) systems.
  • Strong assessment, evaluation, and case management skills.
  • Excellent communication skills with clients, staff, and external partners.
  • Ability to work independently, stay organized, and manage multiple priorities.
  • Valid driverโ€™s license with clean driving record; ability to transport clients as needed.
  • Demonstrated commitment to the recovery community and trauma-informed practices.

Schedule & Work Environment

  • Full-time, on-site position
  • Includes some evening or weekend hours as needed
  • Works across both the Residential Treatment Center and The Butterfly House
