Job Title: Golf Course Superintendent

Reports to: Director of Golf Course Maintenance

Compensation: $120,000 to $140,000 Salary, Based on Experience

Relocation: Relocation Assistance Provided

About John’s Island Club:

Since its inception in 1996, John’s Island Club has been established as a very private, family-oriented Club. John’s Island Club takes full advantage of its barrier island location in Vero Beach, Florida, and is nestled between three miles of sandy beaches along the Atlantic Ocean and the Indian River Lagoon. John’s Island offers classic to casual dining facilities, three 18-hole championship golf courses, 17 har-tru clay tennis courts, singles & doubles squash courts, pickleball courts, a state-of-the-art fitness center, two croquet lawns, and an outstanding calendar of social and recreational activities.

Position Summary:

The Golf Course Superintendent will be responsible for the overall conditions of the North Course, the Club’s longest course, designed by Pete Dye, that cuts around magnificent mature Oak trees. The Golf Course Superintendent will be the leader on the North Course and a member of a team providing tournament golf conditions, managing course renovations, and providing exceptional golf conditions. Working closely with the Director, the Golf Course Superintendent will develop and implement daily, weekly, monthly, and annual goals, objectives, and assignments. This includes but is not limited to agronomical programs, budgeting, ensuring accurate record keeping, irrigation, project work, fertilizer & pesticide applications, and water management. The Golf Course Superintendent will fulfill these responsibilities by positively and effectively leading, directing, overseeing, developing, training, coaching, motivating and assisting the golf course team.

Career Trajectory:

The Golf Course Superintendent will be part of an elite agronomic team whose mission is to provide championship course conditions and exceptional golf experiences for Club members and guests. The Club will provide a working environment that fosters teamwork and personal and professional development through mentorship, education, and support to help individuals interested in advancing their careers either at Johns Island or at another premier facility. Just recently, this position opened because members of the Johns Island Grounds Maintenance team were selected for head Superintendent positions at other top Clubs in the State of Florida.

 

 

Essential Job Functions:

  • Effectively lead, direct, oversee, develop, train, coach, motivate, and assist the golf course team.
  • Schedule, assign, direct, oversee, and assist the team in accomplishing their maintenance activities and verify that work is completed.
  • Inspect the golf course and related areas to evaluate how well standards are being met and provide training and direction as needed.
  • Work closely with the Director in developing, scheduling, implementing, and overseeing activities, goals, and plans relating to course conditions and member satisfaction.
  • Oversee, direct, and assist the team in maintaining the condition of the course, including the turf, bunkers, irrigation, fertilization, and pesticide applications.
  • Oversee and ensure inventories of supplies, such as fertilizers, pesticides, tools, and sand, are monitored and replaced as needed.
  • Communicate with appropriate department heads (golf, catering, food & beverage, etc.) on course conditions, set-up, play, and other matters as needed for the planning and execution of Club events or activities.
  • Ensure chemicals, petroleum, and other controlled products are used, stored, and disposed of in accordance with local and state regulations.
  • Assist in the development and management of the department’s annual budget, including payroll and actuals to budget.
  • Provide for the adequate safety and protection of members, guests, and staff, ensuring compliance with all applicable codes and legal requirements.
  • Attend turf conferences and other educational programs to maintain a current knowledge of technical and turf innovations and changes.
  • Represent the Club, on and off the property, in an ethical and professional manner that will always enhance the Club’s and staff image and reputation.

    Qualifications:

  • Experience leading, developing, training, overseeing, managing, coaching, motivating, and assisting a golf course team.
  • A BS, Associate’s Degree, or Certificate in turf grass management, or equivalent experience.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word, Outlook, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Understanding of pest control products and their applications.
  • Understanding of turf chemical and fertilizer products and their applications.
  • Knowledge of irrigation utilization, drainage installation, repair, and maintenance.
  • Understanding of the game of golf and the impact of agronomic decisions on course playability.
  • A current state license for pesticide applications, or the ability to acquire a license.
