What is a copy editor?

As a copy editor, your responsibilities and duties include reviewing written material, called copy, before it is put into print or posted online. You examine the material for grammar and spelling mistakes and structural errors. You also ensure that the tone, tense, and style meet the guidelines set out by the publisher. If you work in journalism for the copy desk of a news organization, you not only proofread but also fact check and make sure there is no slanderous content. You also check headlines to ensure they are attention grabbing and grammatically correct.

What does a copy editor do?

A copy editor is responsible for reviewing and correcting written material to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency. They check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style errors, and may also verify facts and improve the flow of the text. Copy editors work with writers and other editors to polish content before publication, whether it's for books, magazines, websites, or other media. Their goal is to enhance the readability and professionalism of the final product.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copy editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copy Editor, you need a strong command of grammar, punctuation, and style, often backed by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word's track changes, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help Copy Editors excel in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring error-free, clear, and consistent content that meets publication standards and deadlines.

How do copy editors typically collaborate with writers and other editorial team members during the editing process?

Copy editors work closely with writers to clarify meaning, improve readability, and ensure consistency in style and tone. They often communicate suggested changes and questions through tracked edits or comments, fostering open dialogue to refine the content. Collaboration with other editorial team members, such as fact-checkers or managing editors, is also common to ensure accuracy and adherence to publication standards. Regular meetings and digital collaboration tools help maintain workflow efficiency and resolve any editorial concerns promptly.

What is the difference between Copy Editor vs Proofreader?

Understanding these roles helps in selecting the right professional for your publishing needs.

Are copy editors still in demand?

Copy editors remain in demand across publishing, media, and corporate sectors due to the ongoing need for clear, accurate content. Strong editing skills, familiarity with style guides, and proficiency with editing tools like Microsoft Word or Adobe InCopy enhance job prospects in this field.

The average salary for a copy editor in the United States ranges from $40,000 to $65,000 per year, depending on experience, location, and industry. Job description

Business Development Representative

edgefi | Vancouver, WA (in-office)

About edgefi

edgefi is a managed IT and cybersecurity provider serving businesses across the Pacific Northwest and beyond. We help our clients contain the chaos of day-to-day IT support, technology infrastructure, security operations, and compliance frameworks for regulated industries. We are small, growing quickly, and deeply invested in our clients, our team, and our community.

The Role

We are hiring a Business Development Representative to build the top of our sales funnel through outbound outreach across phone, email, social media, events, and in-person prospecting throughout the Portland and Vancouver metro. You will identify companies that fit our ideal client profile, research decision-makers, run multi-channel outreach, drop into local prospect offices when it makes sense, and book qualified discovery meetings for our sales team.

You will work directly with our Sales and Marketing Manager and have regular exposure to our leadership and technical teams. If you are looking for a role where you can genuinely influence the playbook, own your territory, and get in front of real people instead of only living behind a screen, this is a strong fit.

What You Will Do
  • Research target accounts across construction, manufacturing, professional services, and other industries we serve
  • Run outbound sequences through email, phone, and LinkedIn to book discovery meetings
  • Conduct in-person prospecting visits and drop-bys with local target accounts
  • Attend local networking and sponsored events representing edgefi
  • Qualify prospects against our ICP criteria: company size, IT environment, budget signals, and access to the right decision-maker
  • Qualify inbound leads and schedule discovery meetings
  • Manage your pipeline in HubSpot with clean data and disciplined follow-up
  • Partner closely with sales and marketing on messaging, campaigns, and target lists
  • Test outreach angles, methods, and cadences to steadily improve your booking rate, and share what you learn
What We Are Looking For
  • 1-2 years of relevant experience preferred (sales, customer-facing, IT support, or comparable work)
  • Strong written communication and a self-editing eye, meaning you can tell the difference between copy that sounds like a real person and copy that sounds like a template/AI
  • Confident on the phone and comfortable walking into a business you have never been to before, or willing to become comfortable fast
  • Ambitious and goal-oriented, with a strong drive to learn, take feedback, and grow with a company
  • Organized, self-directed, and honest about what is and is not working in your day
  • Genuine curiosity about business, technology, and how companies actually make buying decisions
  • Willing to try things that aren't in the playbook yet and honest about what worked
  • Based in the Portland or Vancouver metro (this role is in-office at our Vancouver headquarters)
  • Reliable personal transportation and a valid driver's license (mileage reimbursed at the IRS standard rate for prospect visits)
  • Experience selling managed IT, cybersecurity, or professional services is a plus but not required
What We Offer
  • Base salary of $50,000
  • Uncapped commission per qualified discovery meeting held (typical at-plan earnings around $55,000-$65,000; strong performers earn more)
  • Discretionary bonuses for exceptional contribution to closed deals
  • Real growth opportunity as we scale the sales team. We believe in promoting from within, and this role is the natural entry point for someone who wants to grow into a full-cycle sales role at edgefi.
  • Mileage reimbursement at the IRS standard rate for prospect visits
  • Direct working relationships with experienced sales, marketing, and technical leaders
  • 100% healthcare coverage paid by edgefi for employees (including dental and vision)
  • 401(k) matching up to 4%
  • Company-paid parking in a downtown Vancouver parking garage
  • 2 weeks paid vacation, paid holidays, and paid sick time (increases with tenure)
  • $5,000 annual training and professional development budget per employee
  • A small, tight-knit team that takes work seriously, shows up for our clients and our community, and takes care of each other
