What is a contract life insurance agent?

A Contract Life Insurance Agent is a professional who sells life insurance policies on behalf of an insurance company, typically working as an independent contractor rather than as a direct employee. These agents help clients choose appropriate life insurance coverage based on their needs and financial situations. As contractors, they often have flexible schedules and may represent multiple insurance carriers. Their responsibilities include prospecting for new clients, explaining policy options, and assisting with the application and claims process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a contract life insurance agent?

To thrive as a Contract Life Insurance Agent, you need a strong understanding of insurance products, sales techniques, and state licensing as a basic qualification. Familiarity with customer relationship management (CRM) software, digital quoting platforms, and underwriting systems is typically required. Outstanding interpersonal skills, active listening, and self-motivation help agents build trust and effectively address client needs. These skills ensure agents can navigate complex products, comply with regulations, and achieve sales targets while fostering long-term client relationships.

What are some common challenges faced by contract life insurance agents, and how can they be overcome?

Contract life insurance agents often face challenges such as building a strong client base from scratch, managing fluctuating income, and staying up-to-date with changing products and regulations. To overcome these challenges, agents can focus on networking, leveraging referrals, and continuing professional education to enhance their knowledge and credibility. Additionally, establishing a consistent routine for prospecting and following up with clients can help maintain steady business growth and income stability.

Job description

Job Description

Location: Remote — United States
Position Type: Independent Contractor (1099)
Compensation: Commission-only, performance-based

About the Role

Lumina Financial Solution is looking for motivated, experienced professionals to join our growing team as remote Life Insurance Agents and Brokers.

We are especially interested in individuals with backgrounds in sales, insurance, financial services, advising, consulting, or independent contractor roles who want to use those skills to help individuals and families make better financial decisions.

At Lumina, our approach is centered on education and guidance.

Our agents work as independent insurance professionals with access to multiple insurance carriers, allowing them to evaluate different coverage options based on each client's individual needs, goals, health, budget, and financial situation.

As client needs become more sophisticated, our agents also have access to experienced specialists and advanced-market resources for solutions including annuities, cash-value life insurance strategies, IULs, retirement income planning, and other advanced financial solutions through leading insurance and financial-services companies across the country.

We're looking for people who are comfortable having meaningful conversations about money, family, protection, retirement, and long-term financial goals—and who believe that doing what's right for the client comes first.

What You'll Do
  • Meet virtually with individuals and families to understand their financial protection needs
  • Educate clients on life insurance, living benefits, retirement planning concepts, and other financial protection strategies
  • Evaluate coverage options from multiple insurance carriers
  • Help clients select solutions appropriate for their goals, needs, and budget
  • Identify opportunities where clients may benefit from more advanced financial strategies
  • Connect clients with experienced specialists and advanced-market resources for solutions including annuities, IULs, cash-value life insurance strategies, retirement income planning, and other advanced financial solutions
  • Work alongside specialists with access to leading insurance, annuity, and financial-services companies across the country
  • Complete insurance applications and guide clients through the application process
  • Maintain accurate client records and follow-up communication
  • Develop long-term client relationships through education and service
  • Participate in ongoing product, sales, compliance, and professional development training
  • Maintain all required insurance licensing and follow applicable state insurance regulations
Who We're Looking For

This opportunity is best suited for someone who is:

  • Experienced in sales, financial services, insurance, advising, consulting, or another performance-driven profession
  • Comfortable working in a commission-based environment
  • Self-motivated and able to manage their own schedule
  • Confident communicating with clients about financial decisions
  • Coachable and committed to continued professional development
  • Resilient and comfortable with the realities of a sales career
  • Driven by both personal performance and helping clients
  • Able to work independently while being part of a collaborative team
  • Interested in developing deeper knowledge of insurance and financial protection strategies
  • Committed to operating with integrity and putting client needs first
Required Qualifications
  • At least 1 year of professional sales, advisory, client-facing, or related experience
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to work independently in a remote environment
  • Professional and dependable
  • Computer or laptop with webcam
  • Reliable high-speed internet
  • Smartphone
  • Ability to obtain and maintain the appropriate state insurance license
Preferred Qualifications
  • Active Life & Health Insurance License
  • Previous life insurance or financial services experience
  • Financial advisor or financial services background
  • Previous commission-based sales experience
  • Previous independent contractor experience
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term client relationships

Candidates who are not currently licensed may still be considered. Licensing guidance and discounted training resources are available for qualified candidates.

What Lumina Provides
  • Fully remote work environment
  • Flexible scheduling
  • Access to multiple insurance carriers and product solutions
  • Access to advanced-market specialists and resources
  • Structured onboarding and training
  • Ongoing mentorship and professional development
  • Sales and product training
  • National and regional training opportunities
  • Leadership development opportunities
  • Performance-based bonuses and incentives
  • Advancement opportunities based on performance
  • Incentive travel opportunities for qualifying team members
  • A collaborative team focused on serving clients with integrity
Compensation

This is a commission-only independent contractor position. There is no guaranteed salary or hourly wage.

Compensation is based on individual sales production, with additional bonus and incentive opportunities available based on performance and applicable compensation programs.

Estimated annual commission earnings: $75,000–$150,000 for agents producing at the expected activity and sales levels for this role. Individual earnings vary based on production and are not guaranteed.

Specific compensation details and expectations will be discussed during the interview process.

Why Lumina Financial Solution?

We believe financial services should begin with understanding the person sitting across the table.

Our job isn't simply to sell an insurance policy. It's to help families understand what they've already built, identify where they may be financially exposed, and navigate the options available to protect and strengthen their financial future.

Because our agents have access to multiple insurance carriers, the conversation can begin with the client's situation rather than a single company's product.

And when a client's needs extend beyond traditional life insurance, our agents don't have to navigate those conversations alone. Through experienced specialists and advanced-market resources, we can help clients explore more sophisticated strategies involving annuities, IULs, retirement income planning, cash-value accumulation, and other financial solutions.

We're building a team of professionals who take that responsibility seriously.

We provide training, mentorship, systems, carrier access, advanced-market resources, and an environment designed for professional growth. We're looking for people who bring the work ethic, integrity, consistency, coachability, and personal accountability required to succeed in a performance-based career.

If you're looking for a traditional hourly position with guaranteed pay, this opportunity will likely not be the right fit.

If you have a background in sales, insurance, financial services, advising, or independent work—and you're looking for an opportunity where you can grow professionally while helping families make more confident financial decisions—we'd like to hear from you.
