What is a Contract Developer job?

A Contract Developer is a software developer hired on a temporary or project basis to create, modify, or maintain applications and systems. They typically work for clients or companies under a contract agreement rather than as a full-time employee. Their responsibilities may include coding, debugging, testing, and collaborating with teams to meet project requirements. Contract Developers often specialize in specific programming languages or technologies and may work remotely or on-site. The duration and terms of their work vary based on the contract and project scope.

What are some common challenges faced by Contract Developers and how can they be managed?

Contract Developers often work on multiple projects or with various clients, which can present challenges such as rapidly adapting to different codebases, meeting tight deadlines, and managing shifting priorities. Effective communication with stakeholders and clear agreement on project scope and deliverables can help minimize misunderstandings. Staying organized through productivity tools and maintaining continuous skills development also contribute to handling workload fluctuations. By proactively addressing these challenges, contract developers can deliver high-quality work and build strong professional relationships.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Contract Developer position, and why are they important?

To excel as a Contract Developer, strong programming skills, experience with relevant frameworks, and a solid educational background in computer science or related fields are essential. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, project management tools, and possibly certifications such as AWS Certified Developer or Microsoft Certified: Azure Developer Associate are advantageous. Excellent time management, client communication, and adaptability are critical soft skills for success in contract-based work. These skills enable a Contract Developer to efficiently deliver quality results, meet client expectations, and thrive in dynamic, project-oriented environments.

This role is responsible for estimating, analyzing, designing, and planning OSP projects while tracking budgets and ensuring compliance with company and industry standards. The OSP Engineer will also coordinate with municipal agencies, contractors, and utilities to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.

This is a dynamic role that requires strong field and design experience, organizational skills, and the ability to balance technical work with permitting, reporting, and cross-team collaboration.

  • Meet with Township, City, County, and State officials to discuss road and utility projects (travel required; mileage reimbursed).

  • Locate and identify Frontier facilities, working with project managers and municipal engineers to evaluate project impacts.

  • Collaborate with other utilities to develop relocation plans that minimize conflicts and avoid delays.

  • Update design and project systems (FROGS, CAD, Varasset, SiteTracker).

  • Coordinate with power companies and communication providers regarding make-ready work, pole replacements, and service requests.

  • Prepare and submit permits to local, state, and federal agencies (DOT, DNR, Railroad, Pipeline, etc.).

  • Partner with SSP Contractors to ensure timely and cost-effective construction.

  • Address plant damage repair (PDR/DOR) requests, including cable count adjustments and capital projects.

  • Conduct site surveys and design capital projects for cell towers.

  • Support field and central office technicians by investigating and resolving PUC complaints.

  • Work closely with Contract Engineers to ensure projects align with business and client needs.

Core Experience
  • 3-5+ years in copper and fiber-optic telecommunications engineering, including broadband design and OSP construction.

  • 5+ years in network engineering or related field, with strong knowledge of fiber record management, cable counts, and permitting.

  • Skilled in FROGS, CAD updates, and OSP Telecom Construction.

  • Proficiency with Frontier mapping, design tools, and permitting systems.

  • Strong ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines.

  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills with municipal officials, contractors, and internal stakeholders.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of permitting processes and requirements.

  • Ability to travel as needed for project meetings, inspections, and surveys.
