Job description

Position Title: Lead Platform Engineer (SRE) (IC3)
Location: Candidates must live within 50 miles of the OneMain corporate office in Evansville, IN. We will also consider candidates that live within 50 miles of OneMain corporate offices in Baltimore, MD; Wilmington, DE; Charlotte, NC; Irving, TX.
Duration: 6 months with possible conversion to FTE

Pay rate: $70.00 - $75.00

Who we are looking for / Requirements:

  • Advanced hands-on experience administering production ELK/Elastic Stack environments, including Elasticsearch, Logstash, and Kibana.
  • Strong knowledge of Elasticsearch cluster architecture, including node roles, shards, replicas, mappings, templates, aliases, data streams, and index lifecycle management.
  • Experience deploying, configuring, monitoring, maintaining, and troubleshooting highly available multi-node Elasticsearch clusters.
  • Proven ability to diagnose and resolve cluster health, indexing, query performance, shard allocation, JVM, storage, and data-ingestion issues.
  • Experience performing Elastic Stack upgrades, patching, migrations, backups, snapshots, restoration, and disaster recovery activities.
  • Experience designing and maintaining Logstash pipelines, Elasticsearch ingest pipelines, Beats, Elastic Agent, or equivalent data-ingestion integrations.
  • Knowledge of Elastic security capabilities, including authentication, authorization, role-based access control, encryption, certificates, and audit logging.
  • Experience with Elasticsearch performance tuning, capacity planning, index optimization, query optimization, shard rebalancing, and retention management.
  • Hands-on experience creating and supporting Kibana dashboards, visualizations, monitoring, and alerting.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code and configuration management tools, particularly Terraform and Ansible.
  • Experience developing automation and operational tooling using Python, Bash, APIs, or similar scripting technologies.
  • Working knowledge of CI/CD pipelines, Git-based source control, automated deployments, and configuration validation.
  • Experience supporting Elastic platforms in cloud, on-premises, or hybrid infrastructure environments.
  • Understanding of platform reliability and operational practices, including monitoring, alerting, incident response, SLOs, runbooks, and problem management.

Performance Objectives / What you'll be doing:

Platform Design & Development

  • Architect and deploy scalable Elasticsearch solutions for search, observability, and logs/metrics analytics’ use cases.
  • Design and implement ELK/Elastic Stack (Elasticsearch, Logstash, Kibana) and complementary pipelines.
  • Create and manage multi-node clusters across availability zones in cloud and/or on-prem environments.
  • Translate business requirements into technical designs, including indexing strategies, shard allocation, and data modeling

Operations & Support

  • Monitor, maintain, and troubleshoot ELK/Elastic environments & Elasticsearch clusters for performance, stability, and data integrity.
  • Perform performance tuning namely query optimization, indexing pipelines and shard rebalancing.
  • Conduct capacity planning, configuration management, and continuous improvement via metrics, alerts, and automation.
  • Execute version upgrades, patching, and backward-compatible migrations with minimal downtime.

Automation & DevOps Integration

  • Build and maintain Infrastructure as Code (Terraform/Ansible), CI/CD pipelines, and automation scripts (Python, Bash, etc...).
  • Integrate Elasticsearch with cloud providers, cloud-native services, and other opensource observability tools.
  • Enable self-service capabilities for development teams via APIs, templates, and dashboards

Collaboration & Enablement

  • Partner with DevOps, Security, and AppDev teams to integrate Elasticsearch into microservices, CI/CD, and monitoring workflows.
  • Provide expert guidance, code/config reviews, and lightweight scripting to accelerate feature delivery.
  • Create and maintain runbooks, architecture diagrams, KPIs dashboards (Kibana), and troubleshooting guides.

Innovation & Continuous Improvement

  • Evaluate and adopt new Elastic features, plugins, and ecosystem tools.
  • Lead proofs-of-concept for advanced use cases (machine learning, cross-cluster replication, etc.).
  • Identify automation opportunities and drive platform resilience initiatives.
