What is a Contract Brand Designer?

A Contract Brand Designer is a creative professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to develop and enhance the visual identity of a brand. Their main responsibilities include designing logos, selecting color palettes, creating brand guidelines, and ensuring that all visual elements consistently reflect the brand’s values and messaging. Unlike full-time employees, contract designers typically work independently or through agencies, collaborating with clients for specific branding projects. This role requires strong communication skills, an understanding of marketing strategy, and proficiency in design software. Contract Brand Designers help businesses establish a strong, cohesive presence in the market.

How does a Contract Brand Designer typically collaborate with in-house marketing and product teams?

As a Contract Brand Designer, you will often work closely with in-house marketing and product teams to ensure brand consistency and alignment across all visual assets. This collaboration usually involves regular check-ins, feedback sessions, and sharing project updates via tools like Slack or project management platforms. You'll be expected to interpret briefs, adapt to evolving brand guidelines, and incorporate feedback swiftly, all while managing your own time effectively. Building strong communication skills and being adaptable are key to success in this dynamic, cross-functional role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Brand Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Brand Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in brand strategy, and a portfolio demonstrating creative branding work, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Mastery of design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and knowledge of branding guidelines and asset management systems are crucial. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and the ability to interpret client needs set standout designers apart. These skills ensure the delivery of cohesive, impactful brand identities that meet client objectives and drive business value.

Job description

About Open

Present, together.

Who we are:

Present, together. Our mission is simple: to make wellbeing accessible and inspiring for everyone, everywhere. Open is a modern studio reimagining the way people practice mindfulness. We blend music, sound, breath, and movement to create powerful shared experiences — both in-person and online. Inspired by art, culture, and design, we believe in the power of direct experience to transform lives.

Based in Venice, our growing team is diverse, ambitious, and dedicated to building the future of wellness. We’re backed by Founders Fund (Keith Rabois), Susa, LVMH (Miyuki Matsumoto), Coatue (Arielle Zuckerberg), Slow, SV Angel, Maveron, Jack Dorsey, Adrian Aoun, Ben Rubin (Houseparty), and more.

The role:

We’re looking for a contract Brand Designer to support creative across marketing, product, and brand. You’ll design thoughtful, high-quality work that spans social, digital, print, in-app experiences, and campaigns while helping maintain a consistent visual identity as Open grows.

This role is ideal for someone with strong design fundamentals, excellent taste, and the ability to move quickly without sacrificing quality. You’ll work closely with our marketing, content, and product teams to bring ideas from concept through execution.

What you'll work on
  • Social content and campaign visuals built to feel native to the brand
  • Marketing assets across digital and print
  • In-app graphics and supporting visual content
  • Seasonal and editorial moments
You're a fit if you
  • Have 2–4 years of graphic design experience, ideally with some exposure to editorial or lifestyle brands.
  • Proficiency in Figma and Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, Illustrator, After Effects, etc)
  • Motion design or animation experience
  • Have a strong typography sensibility and can work within (and push) an existing design system
  • Are comfortable moving fast — this is a contract role with active production needs
  • Are willing to explore AI workflows
BONUS
  • Video editing experience is a plus
  • An existing practice in mindfulness, movement, or well-being
  • Experience designing for mobile apps or hybrid brands
  • LA Based
