What is a Contract Brand Designer?

A Contract Brand Designer is a creative professional who is hired on a temporary or project basis to develop and enhance the visual identity of a brand. Their main responsibilities include designing logos, selecting color palettes, creating brand guidelines, and ensuring that all visual elements consistently reflect the brand’s values and messaging. Unlike full-time employees, contract designers typically work independently or through agencies, collaborating with clients for specific branding projects. This role requires strong communication skills, an understanding of marketing strategy, and proficiency in design software. Contract Brand Designers help businesses establish a strong, cohesive presence in the market.

How does a Contract Brand Designer typically collaborate with in-house marketing and product teams?

As a Contract Brand Designer, you will often work closely with in-house marketing and product teams to ensure brand consistency and alignment across all visual assets. This collaboration usually involves regular check-ins, feedback sessions, and sharing project updates via tools like Slack or project management platforms. You'll be expected to interpret briefs, adapt to evolving brand guidelines, and incorporate feedback swiftly, all while managing your own time effectively. Building strong communication skills and being adaptable are key to success in this dynamic, cross-functional role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Contract Brand Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Contract Brand Designer, you need strong visual design skills, proficiency in brand strategy, and a portfolio demonstrating creative branding work, often supported by a degree in graphic design or a related field. Mastery of design tools such as Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, and knowledge of branding guidelines and asset management systems are crucial. Exceptional communication, adaptability, and the ability to interpret client needs set standout designers apart. These skills ensure the delivery of cohesive, impactful brand identities that meet client objectives and drive business value.

Job description

At Zymo Research, we believe in the power of design to elevate science and shape how the world sees innovation. We're seeking a highly creative, detail-oriented Graphic Designer on a contract basis (6 months) to join our growing Marketing team. This isn't a role for someone seeking design as self-expression, this is for someone who sees design as strategic visual problem-solving, who can bring clarity, beauty, and brand alignment to every asset created.
You'll help tell the story of the brand and groundbreaking scientific tools by crafting compelling visuals across channels-campaign hero images, print collateral, templates, trade show displays, and more. Your work will touch scientists, business leaders, and global partners-communicating trust, innovation, and purpose in every pixel.
What You'll Do
  • Lead visual execution for campaigns, including hero graphics, product visuals, digital ads, and print collateral.
  • Translate complex scientific ideas into clear, professional, and emotionally resonant visuals that reflect Zymo's brand and mission.
  • Update and evolve brand guidelines to ensure consistency across all channels and departments.
  • Create and maintain templates for marketing materials to streamline production and elevate quality.
  • Collaborate cross-functionally with marketers, UX designers, web developers, and leadership to ensure brand consistency and strategic alignment.
  • Work with external vendors such as printers, mailing houses, and booth fabricators-preparing and delivering production-ready files with precision.
  • Stay current with design technologies including AI design tools and automation to improve workflow and output.
  • Accept and integrate feedback with professionalism and curiosity-seeking to understand and elevate, not just revise.
  • Identify gaps and opportunities in our visual storytelling and proactively propose solutions.

What We're Looking For
  • 3-5 years of professional experience in graphic design, ideally in an in-house or agency setting.
  • Expert-level proficiency with the Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop in particular).
  • Understanding of visual hierarchy, typography, layout design, and color theory.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating multi-channel work across print and digital, including examples of campaign work and brand systems.
  • Experience working with production vendors and preparing press-ready files.
  • Familiarity with AI-driven creative tools and the willingness to experiment and optimize with new technology.
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to confidently present and defend design decisions.
  • Collaborative spirit and an openness to feedback and iteration.
  • A sharp eye for quality and consistency-and a mindset that looks beyond the brief to anticipate needs and elevate outcomes.

Bonus Points
  • Experience in biotech, life sciences, or B2B brand environments.
  • Photography or videography skills.
  • Motion design or animation experience.
  • Experience working in Figma or similar digital collaboration tools.

Zymo Research is a global biotech company with a mission to deliver cutting-edge tools that simplify and advance life science. Since 1994, we've built a reputation for quality, sustainability, and scientific integrity. We're not just designing for today-we're building the visual identity of tomorrow's life science leaders.
We're proud to be an organization that values curiosity, creativity, and collaboration. If you want to make a real impact through design-and not just make things look good-this is the place for you.
