Primary Purpose of Organizational Unit
University Communications and Marketing protects and advances Carolina's reputation as the nation's first and best public research university. In partnership with leaders and colleagues across campus, the team is responsible for developing and implementing an integrated strategy to share the impact of our university's teaching, research and service that improves our state, nation and world. Areas within University Communications and Marketing include Web Planning and Production, Internal Communications, Development Marketing, Executive Communications, Strategic Communications, Marketing, Social Media, Creative Services, and the UNC Visitors Center.
Position Summary
The Development Storytelling & Content Strategist is responsible for developing and executing content that advances fundraising priorities in support of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's mission to serve the people of North Carolina and beyond through teaching, research and public service. Embedded within University Communications and Marketing (UCM) and working in close collaboration with University Development (UDO), this position produces content that highlights the impact of private giving and engagement in enabling the University to address complex challenges and improve lives at scale.
The position serves as managing editor and lead contributor for Carolina Giving Stories, a digital platform that showcases the impact of philanthropy and volunteer engagement across the University. The role is responsible for researching, writing and editing content that brings to life how private support through the generosity of donors, volunteers and private foundations fuels exemplary learning, teaching and research with impact across North Carolina and around the world.
This position supports a portfolio-based content development model, contributing to dedicated storytelling and project-based content needs across UDO, schools, units, centers, and institutes. The position plays an important role in the University's upcoming comprehensive fundraising campaign by translating campaign priorities into compelling narratives and engagement opportunities and contributing to the delivery of integrated communications across digital platforms and channels.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
Bachelor's degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
Required Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Exceptional written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills, with the ability to craft clear, compelling and audience-focused content across platforms. 
* Demonstrated expertise in developing and disseminating content through a range of communication channels, including web, email, and social media, with an understanding of how to tailor messaging for different audiences and formats. 
* Strong editorial judgment, with the ability to critically evaluate, refine and elevate content produced by self and others. 
* Proven record of high performance, with demonstrated initiative, accountability and a consistent drive to produce high-quality work in a fast-paced environment. 
* Experience contributing to strategic and integrated communications planning, with the ability to execute effectively and manage projects from concept through completion. 
* Demonstrated ability to manage complex projects and priorities with a high degree of independence, sound judgment and attention to detail. 
* Strong collaboration skills, with experience working effectively in highly cross-functional, team-oriented environments. 
* Ability to adapt quickly in an evolving organizational context and contribute positively to change.
Preferred Qualifications, Competencies, and Experience
* Experience in higher education, nonprofit or advancement/fundraising communications and marketing. 
* Experience developing content related to fundraising campaigns, donor engagement and/or stewardship. 
* Familiarity with digital publishing platforms and content management systems. 
* Experience working in a matrixed or centralized communications environment. 
* Knowledge of Drupal a plus.
