What do content designers do?

Content designers create, organize, and optimize digital content to ensure clarity, usability, and accessibility for users. They work closely with designers, developers, and stakeholders to develop content strategies, write and edit copy, and use tools like content management systems to deliver effective user experiences.

What Is a Content Designer?

A content designer works as part of the creative team that develops the visual components of a marketing strategy or online advertising campaign. Typical duties and responsibilities are to create different visual assets of a website, social media platform, or other web services, such as a blog or online news source. While some designers work for traditional print media, this term often refers to positions in digital media. A content designer can specialize in different content, such as music or sound, but often works with visual graphics and text.

How much do content designers make in the US?

Content designers in the US typically earn between $70,000 and $120,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Entry-level roles may start around $60,000, while senior positions can exceed $130,000, especially with specialized skills in UX writing and content strategy.

What is the difference between Content Designer vs Content Writer?

AspectContent DesignerContent Writer
CredentialsTypically requires skills in UX, content strategy, and digital design; certifications in UX or content strategy are commonUsually has writing or journalism background; degrees in English, communications, or related fields
Work EnvironmentWorks closely with UX/UI teams, product managers, and designers in digital or tech companiesWorks across various industries, producing articles, blogs, marketing copy, often independently or in marketing teams
Employer & Industry UsageCommonly employed in tech, digital agencies, and user-centered organizationsFound in publishing, marketing, advertising, and corporate communications

While both roles involve content creation, a Content Designer focuses on creating user-centered, strategic content within digital products, often involving UX principles. A Content Writer primarily produces written content for marketing, blogs, or publications. Understanding these differences helps organizations hire the right skill set for their needs.

How does a Content Designer typically collaborate with UX and development teams during a project?

Content Designers work closely with UX designers and developers throughout the product lifecycle. They participate in brainstorming sessions, help create user flows, and ensure content is clear and user-focused. During sprints or agile cycles, Content Designers often review wireframes and prototypes, provide content suggestions, and iterate based on feedback from usability testing. This collaborative approach ensures that content, design, and functionality are seamlessly integrated to enhance the overall user experience.

Is AI replacing designers?

Content designers use AI tools to automate routine tasks and generate content ideas, but AI currently cannot fully replace the creativity, strategic thinking, and user empathy required in the role. AI serves as a complement to human skills, enhancing productivity rather than replacing the need for skilled content designers. Successful professionals often develop expertise in both design principles and AI tool integration.

Is UX a stressful job?

A UX designer or content designer role can be stressful due to tight deadlines, the need for user-centered problem solving, and balancing stakeholder expectations. However, workload and stress levels vary depending on the company, project scope, and individual work environment.

What is a Content Designer?

A Content Designer is a professional who creates, structures, and manages content for digital products, ensuring that information is clear, accessible, and meets user needs. They often collaborate with UX designers, product managers, and developers to produce user-centered content, such as website copy, help articles, and interface text. Their goal is to make complex information simple and intuitive, improving user experiences and helping organizations communicate effectively online.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Content Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Content Designer, you need strong writing, editing, user experience (UX) knowledge, and an understanding of content strategy, often supported by a background in communications, English, or related fields. Familiarity with design systems, content management systems (CMS), prototyping tools, and possibly certifications in UX writing or content strategy are valuable. Exceptional collaboration, attention to detail, and a user-centered mindset are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that content is clear, accessible, and effectively meets both user needs and business goals.

Job description

Shape how enterprise software speaks! As a Senior Content Designer, you will define the language that powers the experience of Epicor products used across manufacturing, distribution, supply chain, and retail industries. Every label, message, workflow, and AI-generated response plays a critical role in helping skilled operators complete complex work with confidence. You will be responsible for establishing content standards, shaping the product voice, and designing content for both traditional product experiences and emerging AI-driven interactions. We are seeking applicants with exceptional writing craft, strategic UX thinking, and a passion for creating clear, trustworthy experiences that help customers work smarter.

What you will be doing:

  • Define and maintain content standards across Epicor products, including UI copy, microcopy, onboarding, contextual help, error states, empty states, and in-product messaging.
  • Establish and evolve the product voice, terminology framework, and writing patterns to ensure consistency across product teams and AI-generated experiences.
  • Design content for AI-powered features, including conversational interfaces, agent responses, system-generated summaries, smart recommendations, and autonomous workflow notifications.
  • Partner closely with Product Designers, Product Managers, and Engineers throughout the product development lifecycle, contributing content strategy from discovery through delivery.
  • Lead content audits and information architecture improvements that simplify complex enterprise workflows, reduce cognitive load, and improve usability.
  • Create and maintain content guidelines, pattern libraries, and documentation that enable teams to produce consistent, high-quality content at scale.
  • Advocate for plain language, mentor designers on content design principles, and contribute to design reviews that elevate the overall product experience.

What you will likely bring:

  • 5-8 years' experience in Content Design, UX Writing, or Content Strategy, with shipped work in enterprise software, B2B SaaS, or other complex workflow-driven products.
  • A portfolio demonstrating the ability to simplify complex concepts through clear, user-centered content and thoughtful interaction design.
  • Experience defining product voice, tone, terminology standards, and scalable content systems across multiple products or platforms.
  • Expertise writing across a variety of product experiences, including UI microcopy, onboarding, contextual guidance, error messaging, and system-generated content.
  • Demonstrated experience incorporating AI into your content design practice, using AI tools for drafting, content analysis, iteration, and quality improvement while maintaining strong editorial judgment.
  • Excellent collaboration, communication, and stakeholder management skills, with the ability to influence cross-functional teams through thoughtful content strategy.

What Could Set You Apart:

  • Experience designing content for AI-powered products, including copilots, conversational interfaces, intelligent agents, autonomous notifications, or AI-generated summaries.
  • Hands-on experience using AI-assisted development tools such as Cursor, Claude, GitHub Copilot, or similar technologies to prototype, test, or scale content experiences.
  • Understanding of AI agents, Model Context Protocol (MCP), or emerging approaches to designing trustworthy AI interactions.
  • A well-developed perspective on the evolving role of Content Design in an AI-first world, balancing human judgment, clarity, structure, and responsible AI communication.
  • Experience working within manufacturing, distribution, supply chain, retail, or other complex enterprise domains.
  • A pragmatic, data-informed approach that values testing, iteration, and continuous improvement based on real user behavior.

Join a team where craft is respected as leadership, innovation is encouraged, and your expertise can influence products used by businesses running real-world operations at scale. Here, your success is our success-and together, we go further.
