What is a component engineer?

A Component Engineer is responsible for selecting, evaluating, and managing electronic and mechanical components used in product designs. They ensure component availability, reliability, and compliance with industry standards. Their role involves working closely with design, procurement, and manufacturing teams to optimize component selection for cost and performance. Component Engineers also help mitigate risks related to obsolescence and supply chain disruptions by identifying alternative parts and manufacturers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a component engineer?

To thrive as a Component Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical or mechanical engineering principles, with a relevant bachelor’s degree and experience in component selection and analysis. Familiarity with PLM (Product Lifecycle Management) systems, CAD tools, and industry standards such as RoHS and IPC is commonly required, and certifications like Six Sigma can be advantageous. Strong analytical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to communicate effectively with cross-functional teams help set you apart. These capabilities are crucial for ensuring high-quality, cost-effective component choices that meet both engineering specifications and compliance requirements.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a component engineer?

As a Component Engineer, your daily responsibilities typically involve selecting and qualifying electronic or mechanical components, maintaining the approved parts list, and ensuring component compliance with industry standards and regulations. You’ll collaborate closely with design, procurement, and quality assurance teams to resolve issues related to part obsolescence, sourcing, and cost optimization. Reviewing technical documentation, analyzing failure data, and providing design support are also regular parts of the role. This position offers a dynamic mix of hands-on technical work and cross-functional communication within a fast-paced engineering environment.

What is the career growth of a component engineer?

Component engineers can advance to senior or lead engineering roles, project management, or specialized positions in supply chain or quality assurance. Gaining expertise in CAD tools, industry standards, and certifications like IPC or Six Sigma can support career progression and increased responsibilities.

Job description

AT Process Technologies (ATP) is a pioneering manufacturing company focused on the development and deployment of modular energetics production plants. Using breakthrough chemistry and automation that operates continuously and generates little to no waste, ATP is expanding energetics production to meet the munitions demands of the US and Allies safely, rapidly, and cost effectively.

Summary

ATP is building a core team of engineers to work alongside our Process and Chemistry R&D teams to develop an autonomous skidded system for next-generation energetics manufacturing. In this role you will own supplier relations, procurement, and component selection as they pertain to delivering project execution - the vendor-facing engineer who decides, alongside the team, what we buy, from whom, and on what terms to keep critical projects on schedule. You'll also aid in managing the project itself, helping keep scope, timelines, and priorities on track while working shoulder-to-shoulder with our Responsible and Test Engineers. The ideal candidate has previously worked on a team that delivers critical projects end-to-end through design, build, and execution and brings the engineering fundamentals to solve a wide range of problems quickly and rigorously.

Key Responsibilities
  • Own supplier and vendor relationships end to end as the primary vendor-facing point of contact
  • Run the full procurement cycle: sourcing, quotes, purchase orders, delivery, and receipt
  • Negotiate pricing, terms, and lead times; resolve quality, delivery, and invoicing issues
  • Evaluate, qualify, and onboard new suppliers; maintain approved/preferred-supplier lists
  • Select components, parts, and materials that meet technical, quality, cost, and lead-time requirements
  • Work with the Process, Chemistry, and engineering teams to interpret requirements and spec the right components
  • Develop and maintain deep product, component, and application knowledge; advise on trade-offs and alternates
  • Own bills of materials (BOMs) and keep purchasing data accurate and current
  • Manage lead times, order tracking, expediting, and inventory to keep project schedules on track
  • Identify and mitigate supply risk through second-sourcing, alternates, and continuity planning
  • Work shoulder-to-shoulder with Responsible and Test Engineers through design, build, and execution
  • Keep procurement and project records complete, accurate, and audit-ready (quotes, POs, specs, BOMs, warranties, acceptance records)
  • Work closely with fabricators and machine shops to procure and manage the production of custom equipment and parts, ensuring specifications, timelines, and quality standards are met.
  • Aid in managing the project helping keep scope, timelines, and priorities on track
  • Contribute to test plans, technical documentation, and engineering reviews
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a related technical field
  • 2+ years in procurement, supply chain, applications/component engineering, or a comparable vendor-facing role
  • Hands-on procurement and vendor negotiation experience, including component and material selection
  • Ability to read technical requirements and translate them into sourcing and component decisions
  • Demonstrated experience supporting critical projects end-to-end (design, build, and execution)
  • Strong engineering fundamentals and the ability to solve a wide range of problems quickly and rigorously
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and organizational skills; able to manage multiple concurrent priorities
  • Strong documentation discipline and attention to detail
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience sourcing precision components, industrial automation/controls, fluid/process systems, or capital equipment
  • Background in energetics, chemicals, process/manufacturing, biotech/pharma, or another regulated industry
  • Familiarity with compliance frameworks (ITAR, CMMC, ISO, cGMP, or similar)
  • Experience with an ERP or procurement/purchasing system and BOM management
  • Exposure to skidded/modular system builds or autonomous/automated process systems
Additional Requirements
  • Ability to lift 50 lbs
  • U.S. Person and ability to obtain a security clearance
  • Ability to work on-site and travel as needed
ITAR Requirements
