Job description

Complex Claims Director – Auto and General Liability

Make your mark in Claims. Our Claims teams are the proven problem solvers of choice for clients, delivering consistent technical excellence and showcasing our service differentiation to create an unparalleled global claims handling experience. Through a robust stakeholder feedback loop and supported by consistent processes and leadership, we take pride in delivering responsive, fair and professional service with empathy and efficiency. The ideal candidate possesses advanced technical expertise in coverage analysis, liability assessment, reserve management, litigation strategy, and claim resolution. Working independently and exercising a high degree of judgment, the Complex Claims Director partners closely with insureds, brokers, underwriters, defense counsel, and senior business leaders to develop effective claim strategies, mitigate risk, and achieve timely, cost‑effective outcomes. This role serves as a technical leader within the claims organization and is expected to provide insight, guidance, and strategic direction on high‑profile and complex matters.

What you need to know:

Claim Investigation and Evaluation. Conduct thorough investigations to determine coverage, liability, causation, and damages. Analyze policy coverage and prepare clear, accurate, and timely coverage correspondence. Re‑evaluate coverage positions as new information becomes available. Establish and maintain accurate reserves throughout the life of the claim based on ongoing exposure assessments. Develop and execute investigative strategies that identify critical issues and opportunities for risk transfer, contribution, or recovery.

Claim Management and Resolution. Independently manage a caseload of complex Auto Liability and General Liability claims from inception through resolution. Negotiate settlements within delegated authority while documenting claim evaluations, strategy, and rationale. Utilize mediation, arbitration, and other alternative dispute resolution methods when appropriate. Maintain an organized diary system to proactively manage claim inventory and ensure timely file activity.

Litigation Management. Direct and manage litigation strategy in partnership with defense and coverage counsel. Attend mediations, settlement conferences, and other litigation‑related proceedings as necessary. Establish clear expectations with counsel regarding case strategy, budgets, reporting requirements, and expense management. Monitor legal expenses and litigation plans to ensure efficient and cost‑effective claim resolution. Participate in pre‑suit, post‑suit, pre‑trial, and post‑trial claim activities.

Communication and Collaboration. Maintain proactive, professional communication with insureds, brokers, underwriters, claimants, and defense counsel. Provide timely claim updates, reserve recommendations, and strategic assessments to key stakeholders. Guide insureds and brokers through the claims process while managing expectations and providing exceptional customer service. Participate in claim reviews, roundtables, and strategy discussions with management and business partners.

Performance Expectations. Deliver exceptional customer service through prompt responsiveness, regular follow‑up, and effective claim stewardship. Consistently adhere to company policies, claims practices, and handling guidelines. Demonstrate sound judgment in coverage analysis, liability assessment, reserve setting, and settlement negotiations. Maintain a high level of technical expertise and claim quality. Effectively prioritize workload and manage claim inventory to achieve timely resolution and optimal outcomes. Build and maintain strong relationships with internal and external business partners.

What you'll need to succeed:

7+ years of Auto Liability and General Liability claims handling experience. Extensive experience managing Commercial Auto, Property Damage, and Bodily Injury claims. Proven litigation management experience with complex Auto and General Liability exposures. Experience attending and directing mediations, settlement conferences, and other dispute resolution proceedings. All Adjuster Licenses must be obtained within 6mos of employment. Strong coverage analysis and policy interpretation skills. Advanced litigation management and negotiation capabilities. Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Demonstrated ability to evaluate complex liability and damages issues. Strong organizational, analytical, and decision‑making abilities. Ability to independently manage competing priorities in a fast‑paced environment. Licensing Property and Casualty licenses are required and must be obtained within six (6) months of hire. New York and/or Texas Adjuster License strongly preferred.

Travel Requirements

Up to 25% travel, including attendance at mediations, settlement conferences, trials, and other claim‑related proceedings.
