Job description

Persons in these roles are expected to work from our offices in Seattle. On-site requirements vary based on position and team. If you have questions about on-site work arrangements for this role, please ask your recruiter.
Our base salary range is $93,300 - $139,500. This role is not eligible for our bonus and incentive programs.
Who You Are:
You are a strong communicator and storyteller, comfortable translating complex or technical topics into clear, engaging narratives and you're excited by the challenge of helping meaningful research reach a wider audience.
You're internet-native and plugged into how conversations happen online. You understand how ideas spread across social media, media coverage, and communities. You're a hands-on communicator who can identify opportunities to tell a story and then help bring that story to life. You enjoy working with researchers, technical teams, and creative collaborators. You ask thoughtful questions, listen closely to how experts describe their work, and turn those insights into clear and compelling communication. You're organized, proactive, and able to manage multiple projects at once while keeping an eye on the bigger picture.
Most importantly, you're excited about helping impactful AI research reach the world and contributing to a mission-driven organization working to advance AI for the common good.
This is a full-time fixed term position for 12-months from start date.
Who We Are:
The Ai2 communications team is a small, creative, mission-driven group working to amplify the voice of Ai2 in the wider world. We stay deeply informed-about our research, the AI industry, and the cultural moment-so we can shape messages that spark curiosity, create connection, and drive impact.
Our goal is to ensure Ai2 is part of the broader AI conversation. That means shining a light on the research happening across the institute, communicating it in ways that are engaging and accessible, and creating opportunities for people to connect with our work. We don't just pass along information after the fact. Communications at Ai2 plays an active role in shaping how research is shared with the world.
This is a collaborative team that works closely with researchers, product teams, and leadership across the institute to ensure our work reflects the depth, rigor, and impact of Ai2's research.
Your Next Challenge:
The essential functions include, but are not limited to the following:
  • Plan and coordinate communications strategies for research launches, announcements, and major initiatives across Ai2.
  • Translate research and technical work into compelling stories for broader audiences across social media, blog posts, and other digital channels.
  • Draft social media content, including threads and posts that help bring Ai2 research into the broader AI conversation.
  • Write and edit blog posts and other written communications that highlight Ai2 research and perspectives.
  • Work closely with researchers, program managers, and project teams to understand upcoming work and identify opportunities for effective communication.
  • Support media and PR efforts.
  • Plan and execute communications and marketing campaigns that amplify key research and projects.
  • Coordinate timelines and logistics for communications projects to ensure launches and campaigns run smoothly.
  • Organize and manage digital and in-person engagement opportunities such as AMAs, community discussions, and industry events.
  • Coordinate special communications projects such as video shoots, podcast recording etc.
  • Support community-building efforts that strengthen connections between Ai2 and the communities we serve.
  • Run and monitor digital engagement initiatives, including advertising campaigns, audience outreach efforts and Google AdWords campaigns.
  • Monitor trends across the AI industry, digital communications, and the philanthropic landscape to identify opportunities for Ai2 to contribute to ongoing conversations.
  • Collaborate with the design and communications team on creative storytelling initiatives and campaigns.

What You'll Need:
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree and 5+ years of experience in communications, marketing, journalism, or a related field, or equivalent work experience.
  • Excellent writing and storytelling skills, with demonstrated ability to communicate complex or technical ideas clearly and engagingly.
  • Experience creating multimedia content for digital platforms.
  • Strong organizational and project coordination skills with proven track record of managing multiple initiatives simultaneously.
  • Curiosity about artificial intelligence and the ability to quickly learn and understand technical topics.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate effectively with researchers, technical teams, and cross-functional partners.
  • Proven ability to manage communications priorities in a fast-moving environment where timelines and opportunities evolve quickly.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience supporting media relations or press outreach.
  • Experience with digital engagement tools, campaign coordination, or online community building.
  • Experience in technology, AI, or science communications.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by a team member to successfully perform the essential functions of this position. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the functions.
  • Must be able to remain in a stationary position for long periods of time.
  • The ability to communicate information and ideas so others will understand. Must be able to exchange accurate information in these situations.
  • The ability to observe details at close range.
  • Can work under deadlines.

While we value powerful research results which drive our mission forward, we also value dinner with family, weekend time, and vacation time. We offer generous paid vacation and sick leave as well as family leave.
  • We are collaborative and transparent - we consider ourselves a team, all moving with a common purpose. We are quick to cheer our successes, and even quicker to share and jointly problem solve our failures.
  • We are in Seattle - and our office is on the water! We have mountains, we have lakes, we have four seasons, we bike to work, we have a vibrant theater scene, and we have so much else. We even have kayaks for you to paddle right outside our front door. We welcome interest from applicants from outside of the United States.
