What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in commission boat building, and why are they important?

To excel in commission boat building, you need strong craftsmanship, knowledge of marine construction methods, and experience with materials like fiberglass, wood, and composites, often supported by vocational training or apprenticeships. Familiarity with CAD software, power tools, and industry safety standards is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills are vital for understanding client needs and ensuring quality outcomes. These abilities ensure that custom boats are built safely, efficiently, and to the precise specifications of clients.

What are some common challenges faced in commission boat building projects, and how can professionals prepare for them?

Commission boat building often involves working closely with clients who have specific requirements and expectations, which can lead to evolving project scopes and design changes. Managing timelines, sourcing specialized materials, and ensuring compliance with safety and maritime regulations are also frequent challenges. Professionals can prepare by developing strong project management and communication skills, staying updated on industry standards, and fostering collaborative relationships with naval architects, engineers, and suppliers. Being adaptable and detail-oriented helps ensure successful delivery of custom vessels.

What is the difference between Commission Boat Building vs Boat Builder?

AspectCommission Boat BuildingBoat Builder
CredentialsTypically requires certifications in boat design, marine engineering, or craftsmanshipMay require similar certifications, but often more focused on general boat construction skills
Work EnvironmentCustom, client-specific projects often in specialized yards or workshopsMass production or custom projects in various boatyards or manufacturing facilities
Industry UsageUsed in luxury, custom, or high-end boat marketsCommon across recreational, commercial, and industrial boat manufacturing

Commission Boat Building involves creating custom, client-specific vessels often requiring specialized skills and certifications. Boat Builders focus on constructing a wide range of boats, from mass-produced to custom projects. While both roles share foundational skills, Commission Boat Building emphasizes bespoke craftsmanship and client collaboration, making it more specialized within the boat manufacturing industry.

What is commission boat building?

Commission boat building is the process where a client hires a boat builder or shipyard to design and construct a custom boat or yacht according to their specific requirements and preferences. Unlike purchasing a pre-made vessel, this approach allows for personalized features, materials, and designs tailored to the owner's needs. The process typically involves close collaboration with naval architects, designers, and craftsmen to ensure the finished product meets the client's expectations. It often takes several months to years, depending on the size and complexity of the boat. This method is commonly chosen by those seeking unique, high-quality, or specialized vessels.

Boater's World Marine Centers is seeking a motivated and customer-focused Consignment Sales Consultant to join our team in Grand Prairie, TX.

This role is focused on helping boat owners sell their vessels while supporting one of the dealership's most important functions-bringing quality inventory into our sales pipeline. You'll work directly with sellers, buyers, and dealership leadership to help manage the consignment process from the initial conversation through final sale.

We're looking for someone who enjoys working with people, following up on opportunities, building relationships, and staying organized in a fast-paced environment. Success in this role comes from consistency, communication, and a willingness to put in the effort to keep deals moving forward.

This is not a position where you'll simply wait for opportunities to come to you. The most successful candidates will be proactive, responsive, and comfortable managing multiple conversations and leads at once.

Why This Role Stands Out

  • ย Competitive compensation with strong commission earning potential
  • ย Opportunity to play a direct role in dealership inventory growth and sales success
  • ย Work with boat owners, buyers, and a variety of marine products every day
  • ย Established dealership with strong brand recognition and consistent inventory demand
  • ย Supportive leadership team and structured sales process
  • ย Clear opportunities for advancement and long-term career growth within Boater's World Marine Centers and the Outdoor Network family of companies

What You'll Be Doing

Seller Outreach & Consignment Acquisition

  • ย Serve as the primary point of contact for boat owners interested in consigning boats, trailers, and marine equipment
  • ย Proactively reach out to prospective sellers through outbound calls, inbound leads, email follow-ups, referrals, and in-person conversations
  • ย Clearly explain the consignment process, pricing strategy, timelines, and expectations
  • ย Build urgency and maintain momentum to move sellers from initial interest to signed consignment agreements
  • ย Manage a high-volume pipeline of seller conversations and opportunities

Deal Management & Pipeline Execution

  • ย Track leads from first contact through intake and final sale
  • ย Maintain consistent follow-up to prevent deals from stalling
  • ย Coordinate with sales leadership and management teams on pricing and inventory strategy
  • ย Support buyers and sellers throughout the transaction process

Inventory Coordination & Organization

  • ย Evaluate incoming consignment units and assist with pricing, condition notes, and market positioning
  • ย Ensure inventory details are accurate, complete, and entered correctly into dealership systems
  • ย Monitor inventory status across multiple active listings and stages of the sales process

Customer Experience & Administrative Accuracy

  • ย Deliver a professional, responsive experience to both sellers and buyers
  • ย Answer questions confidently and resolve issues quickly
  • ย Ensure all contracts, documentation, and records are completed accurately and in compliance with dealership standards

Team Collaboration

  • ย Work closely with Sales, Service, and Leadership teams to support dealership growth goals
  • ย Contribute to a high-energy, execution-focused team environment

Requirements

Who We're Looking For

  • Experience in high-volume sales, inside sales, outside sales, hospitality, call centers, collections, or commission-based roles
  • Comfortable with outbound outreach, follow-up, and pipeline management
  • Marine, automotive, RV, equipment, or consignment experience is a plus, but not required

Skills & Traits

  • High energy, self-motivated, and comfortable making frequent outbound calls
  • Strong communication, persuasion, and relationship-building skills
  • Organized and detail-oriented with the ability to manage multiple deals simultaneously
  • Goal-driven and motivated by commission-based earnings
  • Comfortable using CRM systems, inventory tools, and Microsoft Office
  • Strong sense of urgency, accountability, and follow-through

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required
  • Associate or bachelor's degree in business, marketing, or a related field is a plus
