Job description

The Position: Columbus Academy seeks a full-time, salaried, exempt, year-round Assistant Director of Campus Safety and Security with responsibilities to begin immediately. Evening and weekend work will be required based on major campus events or facilities emergencies. This position requires after-hours and 24/7 on-call response as needed.

Qualifications (preferred candidates will possess the following qualifications):

  • Bachelor’s degree or higher

  • 5+ years in security or law enforcement management

  • Demonstrated experience working in successful team development and management, as well as in the implementation of new programs and approaches

  • Proficiency with modern software and office suites in addition to experience with video and access-control databases

  • Must be physically able to perform and/or assist with the functions of the positions under supervision when necessary

  • A growth minded approach, with interest in leading, teaching and mentoring

  • Ability to work independently and utilize independent judgement

  • Ability to maintain strict confidentiality, to interface with a diverse constituency, and to represent the school with integrity and professionalism

  • Ability to navigate challenging situations with the utmost professional demeanor

  • Demonstrated ability to accomplish goals and objectives within established priority and timeframes

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, including the ability to establish respect, credibility and trust while maintaining productive working relationships at all levels of the school

Position Expectations (the individual selected to this position will be expected to carry out the following responsibilities):

The Assistant Director of Campus Safety and Security supports the Director in leading and managing all aspects of campus safety operations. This role is responsible for ensuring a safe and secure environment for students, faculty, staff and visitors through proactive planning, team leadership, emergency preparedness, and strong community partnerships.

  • Leadership and Supervision

    • Supervise, train and support a team of 24/7/365 campus Safety Resource Officers to ensure high performance and professionalism

    • Provide guidance, coaching and accountability to team members

    • Demonstrate the ability to perform the duties of staff under supervision when needed to maintain continuity of operations

  • Operations and Safety Management

    • Assist in the daily oversight of campus safety and security operations, including supervision of personnel and deployment of resources

    • Support the development and implementation of safety policies, procedures, and best practices

    • Monitor campus activity and respond to incidents, emergencies, and safety concerns as needed

    • Oversee and monitor video systems on as-needed basis for special events, incidents, or crises situations

    • Develop and deliver crime prevention and safety awareness programs for the campus community

  • Emergency Management and Coordination

    • Assist in the planning, coordination, and execution of emergency preparedness and response protocols

    • Actively participate in crisis management and serve in a leadership role during emergency situations

    • Maintain readiness through training, drills, and collaboration with internal stakeholders and external agencies

  • Community Relations

    • Maintain regular communication with administrators, department heads, faculty, and student groups to support a safe campus environment

    • Serve as a primary liaison with local law enforcement, fire departments, and emergency response agencies

    • Manage relationships with local government and community partners to ensure coordination and cooperation

    • Represent the department at meetings, trainings, and special events both on campus and within the community

  • Equipment Management

    • Conduct regular inspections and audits of all safety equipment, including access control, fire systems, camera/video and communication devices

    • Ensure all issued and shared equipment is properly maintained, inventoried and operational

    • Coordinate with vendors to schedule service, negotiate contracts, and manage costs for security related systems and equipment

  • Additional Responsibilities

    • Perform other duties as assigned to support the goals of Campus Safety and Security

  • Physical Requirements

    • Ability to work effectively within a school environment across multiple buildings and levels

    • Capability to move throughout campus facilities, including stairs and various terrains

    • Perform tasks involving repetitive motion, including computer use

    • Occasionally lift, move, or arrange light equipment, furniture, or materials

    • Work in a non-smoking campus environment
