JOB SUMMARY: The Powder Coating Supervisor is responsible for overseeing all daily operations within the powder coating department. This includes prepping, coating, curing, and inspecting parts to ensure they meet safety, quality, and delivery requirements.
This hands-on leadership role ensures compliance with operating procedures, promotes workplace safety, and drives performance. The Powder Coating Supervisor plays a key role in developing team members, maintaining equipment, and supporting continuous improvement efforts within the department.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES amp; RESPONSIBILITIES include the following:
Production amp; Workflow
  • Supervise and coordinate powder coating activities including prep, hanging, coating, curing, and unloading.
  • Assign daily tasks to team members and adjust labor as needed to meet production schedules.
  • Ensure proper material flow, efficient line loading/unloading, and part tracking.
  • Collaborate with other departments to prioritize parts based on project deadlines.
Team Leadership
  • Provide training, coaching, and daily guidance to powder coaters, prep technicians, and material handlers.
  • Lead shift meetings and communicate daily goals, safety messages, and production updates.
  • Support performance management activities including evaluations, feedback, and corrective action.
  • Foster a clean, organized, and team-oriented work environment.
Quality amp; Safety
  • Ensure all powder-coated parts meet finish and durability standards as defined by drawings and specifications.
  • Oversee inspections for surface preparation, coating thickness, color accuracy, and cure validation.
  • Enforce all safety protocols including PPE use, ventilation system operation, and fire safety procedures.
  • Monitor and maintain compliance with EPA, OSHA, and facility environmental standards.
Equipment amp; Maintenance
  • Ensure powder coating booth, ovens, and application tools are cleaned, calibrated, and properly maintained.
  • Report equipment malfunctions and coordinate with maintenance for repairs and PM.
  • Track powder inventory and usage to minimize waste and control costs.
Continuous Improvement
  • Identify opportunities to improve workflow, reduce overspray, minimize rework, and shorten cycle times.
  • Support Lean Manufacturing initiatives such as 5S, visual controls, and standard work procedures.
  • Collaborate with engineering and quality teams to resolve issues and improve coating processes.
  • Other duties as assigned.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Directly supervises hourly production staff in powder coating.
  • Responsible for staffing, coaching, performance management, and scheduling within the assigned areas.
  • Creates a positive, disciplined work environment focused on results and continuous improvement.
  • Provides regular updates to the Area Manager and collaborates on staffing and production planning.
TRAVEL DEMANDS:
  • May require occasional travel locally, to customer sites, or for training purposes.
QUALIFICATIONS amp; REQUIREMENTS:
  • Strong understanding of electrostatic powder application, oven curing, and metal surface preparation.
  • Familiarity with inspection tools (e.g., mil gauges, gloss meters, etc.).
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office (Excel, Word); ERP system experience is a plus.
  • Effective communicator with strong organizational and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work in a dynamic, fast-paced manufacturing environment.
  • Familiarity with Lean Manufacturing and Continuous Improvement methodologies.
  • Strong communication, coaching, and team-building skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word); ERP system experience preferred.
  • Strong organizational and decision-making abilities in a high-paced environment.
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, hands-on environment with daily production demands.
  • Strong basic math (addition, subtraction, multiplication, division).
  • Basic reading and writing proficiency.
  • Successful completion of 90-day probationary period.
EDUCATION amp; EXPERIENCE:
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical certification in industrial coatings or related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combination of education and relevant experience will be considered.
  • Lean Manufacturing or Six Sigma training a plus.
  • Minimum 3โ€“5 years of powder coating experience in a manufacturing environment. At least 1โ€“2 years of leadership or supervisory experience preferred.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
  • Regular standing, walking, lifting, and use of hand tools.
  • Lifting up to 50 lbs occasionally.
  • Exposure to powder materials, chemicals, and elevated oven temperatures.
  • Must be able to wear required PPE (respirators, gloves, goggles, etc.).
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
  • Manufacturing environment with exposure to airborne particulates, fumes, and high temperatures.
  • Moderate to high noise levels.
  • Must follow all safety protocols and comply with environmental handling procedures.
  • Hands-on leadership presence expected on the shop floor.
