What is a Coastal Modeling job?

A Coastal Modeling job involves using computer simulations and data analysis to study coastal processes such as tides, waves, erosion, and sea-level rise. Professionals in this field develop models to predict and mitigate coastal hazards, support infrastructure planning, and inform environmental management. They work with various datasets, hydrodynamic models, and geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze coastal dynamics. Coastal modelers are employed in government agencies, research institutions, private consulting firms, and environmental organizations. Their work is crucial for sustainable coastal development and climate change adaptation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Coastal Modeling position, and why are they important?

To thrive in Coastal Modeling, you typically need a background in oceanography, environmental engineering, or a related field, along with strong analytical and mathematical modeling skills. Experience with coastal modeling software such as MIKE, Delft3D, ADCIRC, or similar tools, as well as proficiency in programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is highly valued. Effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for interpreting complex data, conveying findings to stakeholders, and developing reliable, real-world solutions for coastal zone management and engineering challenges.

What are some typical projects or deliverables for someone in a Coastal Modeling role?

As a Coastal Modeling professional, you might work on projects such as simulating coastal erosion and sediment transport, forecasting storm surge and tidal patterns, or assessing the impact of sea level rise on local infrastructure. Deliverables often include technical reports, data visualizations, model calibration and validation results, and presentations to project teams or clients. You can expect to collaborate with environmental scientists, civil engineers, and policy makers to translate modeling outcomes into actionable recommendations. These projects are vital for supporting coastal planning, risk mitigation, and sustainable development in vulnerable shoreline communities.

Youโ€™ll receive real-world training in hydrology, hydraulics, and GIS, while helping shape the maps that inform disaster planning, insurance, and infrastructure decisions across the U.S.

This is more than a job โ€” itโ€™s an opportunity to be mentored by top coastal and water resource professionals, contribute to high-impact national work, and build a meaningful, long-term career.

Due to federal contract requirements, only U.S. citizens will be considered for this position. Candidates on student and/or work visas or other authorizations (e.g., OPT, H1B, GreenCards/permanent residency) are not eligible.

As a Coastal or Water Resources Engineer, youโ€™ll work with experienced engineers and scientists to:

  • Review Letter of Map Revision (LOMR) requests to evaluate proposed changes to flood hazard data.
  • Analyze hydrologic and hydraulic (H&H) and/or coastal models for technical soundness.
  • Contribute to model development, mapping support, and technical documentation.
  • Ensure compliance with NFIP technical standards and other governmental regulations.
  • Communicate your findings clearly in written reports and with project stakeholders.

  • Grow your career.

Requirements

A qualified candidate will possess the following:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Civil, Coastal, Environmental Engineering (or a related field) with a focus in water resources and/or engineering water and/or coastal hazard modeling
  • 0โ€“5 years of experience in civil, coastal, and/or water resources or related engineering
  • EIT certification preferred (or in progress), with the goal of obtaining PE licensure
  • Must be a U.S. citizen (required for federal work).

Preferred Candidate Characteristics ย

  • Familiarity with H&H modeling tools like HEC-HMS, HEC-RAS, HEC-RAS 2D, FLO-2D, SWMM, ICPR, or MIKE series tools and/or coastal modeling tools like ADCIRC, CSHORE, or WHAFIS.
  • Working knowledge of ArcGIS / ArcGIS Pro.
  • Strong writing and communication skills.
