What types of projects or tasks can I expect to work on during a Coastal Modeling internship?

As a Coastal Modeling intern, you can expect to work on projects involving data collection, model setup and calibration, and scenario analysis using specialized software such as Delft3D or MIKE21. Your daily tasks may include processing field or remote sensing data, assisting with simulations of tides, waves, or sediment transport, and preparing visualizations or technical reports. Interns often collaborate closely with senior modelers, environmental engineers, and project managers, gaining exposure to real-world coastal engineering challenges and solutions. This hands-on experience provides a strong foundation for career growth in environmental and coastal engineering fields.

What are Internship Coastal Modeling positions?

Internship Coastal Modeling positions are temporary roles, often for students or recent graduates, that provide hands-on experience in coastal modeling—using computer simulations to study coastal processes such as tides, erosion, flooding, and sediment transport. Interns typically assist with data collection, model setup, analysis, and reporting, often supporting research or engineering projects aimed at understanding or managing coastal environments. These positions are valuable for gaining practical skills in environmental science, oceanography, or civil engineering and preparing for a career in coastal or marine research.

What is the difference between Internship Coastal Modeling vs Coastal Engineering Intern?

AspectInternship Coastal ModelingCoastal Engineering Intern
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or recent graduate in oceanography, environmental science, or civil engineeringUsually studying civil, environmental, or coastal engineering
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, modeling software, data analysisConstruction sites, field surveys, design projects
Industry UsageResearch institutions, government agencies, consulting firmsEngineering firms, government agencies, construction companies

Internship Coastal Modeling focuses on developing and analyzing computational models of coastal processes, while Coastal Engineering Internships involve practical design and construction projects related to shoreline protection and infrastructure. Both roles require a background in engineering or environmental sciences, but they differ in daily tasks and work environments.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Internship Coastal Modeling, and why are they important?

To thrive as an intern in Coastal Modeling, you generally need a background in environmental science, oceanography, or engineering, with coursework or experience in hydrodynamics and data analysis. Familiarity with modeling software such as Delft3D, MIKE21, or MATLAB, as well as GIS tools, is typically expected. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are vital soft skills for collaborating with teams and presenting findings. These skills and qualifications are crucial for accurately simulating coastal processes, supporting project goals, and contributing to environmental management solutions.

Prior university experience is preferred. The successful candidate will teach undergraduate courses and/or supervise field experiences and internships. Prior university experience is preferred.
The Physical Education Program at Coastal Carolina University is a specifically designed program of study that meets educational requirements for South Carolina licensure in grades PreK-12 in public schools. Students in the nationally recognized Physical Education Program learn the art and science of teaching movement to PreK-12 students through laboratory, research and field experiences. They learn theory and principles of human movement in the areas of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics, psychology and motor behavior. Students develop and analyze fundamental motor, fitness and sport skills necessary to model, deliver and assess quality instruction. Students learn best practices in teaching through a sequential program of pedagogical skill development, which culminates in teaching licensure.
Coastal Carolina University is a public comprehensive liberal arts institution located in Conway, South Carolina, just nine miles from the Atlantic coastal resort city of Myrtle Beach.
