What is coastal modeling?

A Coastal Modeling job involves using computer simulations and data analysis to study coastal processes such as tides, waves, erosion, and sea-level rise. Professionals in this field develop models to predict and mitigate coastal hazards, support infrastructure planning, and inform environmental management. They work with various datasets, hydrodynamic models, and geographic information systems (GIS) to analyze coastal dynamics. Coastal modelers are employed in government agencies, research institutions, private consulting firms, and environmental organizations. Their work is crucial for sustainable coastal development and climate change adaptation.

What are some typical projects or deliverables for someone in coastal modeling?

As a Coastal Modeling professional, you might work on projects such as simulating coastal erosion and sediment transport, forecasting storm surge and tidal patterns, or assessing the impact of sea level rise on local infrastructure. Deliverables often include technical reports, data visualizations, model calibration and validation results, and presentations to project teams or clients. You can expect to collaborate with environmental scientists, civil engineers, and policy makers to translate modeling outcomes into actionable recommendations. These projects are vital for supporting coastal planning, risk mitigation, and sustainable development in vulnerable shoreline communities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in coastal modeling, and why are they important?

To thrive in Coastal Modeling, you typically need a background in oceanography, environmental engineering, or a related field, along with strong analytical and mathematical modeling skills. Experience with coastal modeling software such as MIKE, Delft3D, ADCIRC, or similar tools, as well as proficiency in programming languages like Python or MATLAB, is highly valued. Effective communication, problem-solving, and teamwork are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies are crucial for interpreting complex data, conveying findings to stakeholders, and developing reliable, real-world solutions for coastal zone management and engineering challenges.

Coastal Engineer:
We are seeking a motivated and technically skilled Coastal Engineer to join our team in delivering impactful solutions for coastal communities and infrastructure. This role focuses on the planning, design, and implementation of coastal engineering projects across the Gulf Coast, South Atlantic Ocean coast, and the Caribbean with emphasis on flood protection, shoreline stabilization, habitat restoration, and resilience planning.
The ideal candidate will bring experience working in dynamic coastal environments and be familiar with the unique challenges of the coastline, including storm surge, subsidence, and hurricane impacts.

What will you do:
  • Support the design and delivery of coastal infrastructure projects including dunes, seawalls, levees, breakwaters, revetments, and beach nourishment.
  • Perform coastal and hydrodynamic modeling using tools such as ADCIRC, SWAN, Delft3D, MIKE21, Beach-fx, CMS-Flow, CMS-Wave, and others.
  • Perform analyses of wave statistics, tides, and sediment transport.
  • Assist with the permitting process through the state, federal, and other regulatory agencies.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary teams including water resources engineers, environmental scientists, GIS specialists, and planners.
  • Prepare technical documents, engineering reports, and presentations for clients and stakeholders.
  • Conduct field assessments and site inspections along the coast.
  • Contribute to the development of climate adaptation and sea-level rise strategies for coastal communities.

What you will need:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Coastal Engineering, Ocean Engineering, Civil Engineering, or related field.
  • 2–6 years of coastal engineering experience (entry- and mid-level candidates encouraged to apply).
  • Knowledge of coastal processes, water wave mechanics, and shoreline protection methods.
  • Proficiency in coastal modeling and design software.
  • Strong technical writing and oral communication skills.
  • Ability to travel for fieldwork and project meetings.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Coastal or Civil Engineering.
  • EIT or Professional Engineer (PE) license in Florida, Louisiana, or Texas (or ability to obtain within 6 months).
  • Familiarity with local, state and federal coastal policies and permitting requirements.
  • Experience working on FEMA floodplain studies, Corps of Engineers projects, or coastal resiliency planning initiatives.
  • Experience with nature-based and hybrid infrastructure approaches.

The Halff Coastal Engineering Advantage:
  • Work on high-impact projects that protect and restore coastal communities.
  • Competitive salary and benefits, including 401(k), health coverage, and professional development support.
  • Opportunity to collaborate with state and federal agencies on regional coastal initiatives.
