What are FinOps Engineers?

FinOps Engineers are professionals who specialize in cloud financial management, helping organizations optimize their cloud spending and improve budgeting, forecasting, and cost allocation. They work closely with engineering, finance, and operations teams to implement best practices for cloud usage and cost control. Their goal is to ensure that cloud investments deliver maximum business value by balancing performance, cost, and innovation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a FinOps Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a FinOps Engineer, you need a solid understanding of cloud computing, financial analysis, and cost optimization, often supported by a background in computer science, finance, or cloud certifications. Familiarity with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), cost management tools, and data analytics systems is essential. Strong problem-solving, cross-functional collaboration, and effective communication skills set top performers apart in this role. These skills are crucial for managing cloud spending efficiently and enabling organizations to maximize value from their cloud investments.

Finops Engineers focus on managing and optimizing cloud costs, working closely with finance and operations teams. Cloud Engineers build and maintain cloud infrastructure. While both roles require cloud platform knowledge, Finops Engineers specialize in cost management, making them distinct yet complementary roles in cloud environments.

How does a FinOps Engineer typically collaborate with engineering and finance teams to optimize cloud spending?

A FinOps Engineer acts as a bridge between engineering and finance teams by translating technical cloud usage data into actionable financial insights. They often participate in regular meetings with both groups to review cloud costs, identify optimization opportunities, and set budgetary controls. This role requires clear communication to ensure that engineering teams can maintain performance while finance teams achieve cost visibility and predictability. FinOps Engineers also help establish and enforce best practices for tagging, resource allocation, and forecasting to support collaborative decision-making.

The Impact You Will Have in This Role
We are seeking a FinOps Practitioner to lead cloud financial optimization across AWS, Azure, and Snowflake environments within a regulated financial services organization. This role serves as a critical bridge between Finance, Engineering, Architecture, and Cloud Operations, ensuring that cloud investments are aligned with business objectives, financial discipline, and operational efficiency.
In this role, you will establish and mature FinOps capabilities aligned with the industry-standard FinOps Foundation framework (Inform, Optimize, Operate) while driving governance, transparency, and accountability for cloud spend. You will partner closely with stakeholders to track FinOps objectives, influence architectural and consumption decisions, and embed a culture of fiscal responsibility across the organization.
Your Primary Responsibilities:
  • Establish and mature key FinOps capabilities aligned with the FinOps Foundation framework (Inform, Optimize, Operate) across AWS, Azure, and Snowflake environments.
  • Lead FinOps practices to optimize and govern cloud spend across multi-cloud and data platform ecosystems.
  • Collaborate with Finance, Engineering, Architecture, Product, and Cloud Operations stakeholders to define, track, and measure FinOps objectives, ensuring ongoing visibility into cost performance and business outcomes.
  • Develop and enforce cost allocation models, tagging standards, and chargeback/showback frameworks.
  • Establish governance standards for resource usage, pricing model adoption (e.g., Reserved Instances, Savings Plans), and Snowflake warehouse and consumption optimization.
  • Conduct detailed analysis of cloud and data platform cost data to identify savings opportunities, waste, and efficiency improvements.
  • Implement and recommend rightsizing, scheduling, and reserved capacity strategies while balancing performance, resilience, and cost efficiency.
  • Partner with engineering teams to influence architectural decisions through financial impact analysis and cost modeling.
  • Collaborate with Finance and Business Unit leaders on budgeting, forecasting, variance analysis, and financial planning for cloud and data platform expenses.
  • Build and maintain cloud spend models that demonstrate historical trends, growth patterns, and unit-cost metrics.
  • Communicate cost insights and optimization outcomes to senior leadership through dashboards and executive-ready reporting.
  • Leverage cloud cost management and FinOps tooling (e.g., AWS Cost Explorer, Azure Cost Management, Snowflake Usage Views, CloudHealth, CloudAware, Cloudability) for continuous monitoring and reporting.
  • Serve as a liaison across Finance, Engineering, Architecture, and Product teams to foster cost awareness, accountability, and informed decision-making.
  • Champion FinOps principles, standards, and continuous improvement initiatives across the organization.

Qualifications
  • Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience
  • Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent professional experience

Talent Needed for Success
  • 3-5 years of experience in cloud cost management, cloud operations, or technology finance, preferably within financial services or another regulated industry.
  • Deep working knowledge of AWS, Azure, and Snowflake billing models, pricing structures, and optimization levers.
  • Experience managing multi-cloud cost governance and reporting frameworks.
  • Strong understanding of FinOps principles, including budgeting, forecasting, unit economics, and cost transparency.
  • Advanced Excel skills and experience with data visualization tools such as Power BI, Tableau, or QuickSight.
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively with both technical and finance audiences, including senior leadership.
  • FinOps Certified Practitioner or FinOps Certified Professional (or willingness to obtain).
  • Familiarity with ITIL and cloud governance frameworks.
  • Experience with data platforms and Snowflake usage optimization (e.g., warehouse sizing, auto-suspend, consumption analysis).
  • Proficiency in SQL and/or scripting for custom cost analytics and automation.
  • Strong financial literacy, analytical thinking, and attention to detail.
