What is a clinical supervisor?

A Clinical Supervisor is a professional who oversees and supports the work of clinicians, such as therapists, counselors, or social workers, ensuring that they provide effective and ethical care to clients. Clinical Supervisors provide guidance, feedback, and mentorship, monitor case management, and help with professional development. They are also responsible for ensuring that clinical staff adhere to organizational policies, regulatory standards, and best practices within the field.

How does a clinical supervisor balance administrative duties with direct supervision of staff?

Clinical Supervisors are responsible for overseeing both the clinical performance of their team and managing various administrative tasks such as scheduling, documentation, and compliance reporting. Balancing these responsibilities requires strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize urgent clinical concerns while maintaining accurate records and ensuring regulatory standards are met. Many Clinical Supervisors schedule regular supervision sessions and delegate certain administrative tasks to support staff when possible. This dual focus supports both staff development and efficient clinic operations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a clinical supervisor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Clinical Supervisor, you need a strong background in clinical practice, supervisory experience, and typically a relevant advanced degree and professional licensure. Familiarity with case management software, electronic health records, and regulatory compliance systems is often required. Excellent leadership, communication, and conflict-resolution skills help foster team development and support staff effectively. These competencies ensure quality clinical care, regulatory adherence, and a positive work environment for both clients and staff.

What is the difference between Clinical Supervisor vs Clinical Counselor?

While both roles require similar credentials and work in mental health settings, a Clinical Supervisor primarily oversees clinical staff and ensures quality care, whereas a Clinical Counselor provides direct therapy to clients. The Clinical Supervisor role focuses on supervision and compliance, while the Clinical Counselor focuses on client treatment and support.

How do you become a clinical supervisor?

To become a clinical supervisor, individuals typically need a relevant master's or doctoral degree in a mental health or healthcare field, along with several years of clinical experience. They must also obtain licensure or certification required in their profession and often pursue additional training or supervision skills to qualify for supervisory roles.

Job description

Clinical Supervisor / Therapist

Le Mars | Carroll | Cherokee | Denison | Ida Grove | Storm Lake, Iowa

$87,550 -- $94,760 depending on experience | Bilingual differential available

Our client is looking for a Clinical Supervisor who wants to lead, develop clinicians, and stay connected to the work that matters — not just manage paperwork from a distance. This is a supervisory role with a direct service component.

About Our Client

Our client is a Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic (CCBHC) and Community Mental Health Center with multiple locations across Northwest Iowa. Their mission is straightforward: provide accessible, high-quality mental health services to the people in the communities they serve, honoring each individual's dignity, worth, and potential for growth.

As a CCBHC, they serve everyone — regardless of insurance status, ability to pay, or complexity of need.

Position Summary

The Clinical Supervisor provides both clinical and administrative supervision to assigned clinicians across one or more locations. You will carry a reduced direct service caseload while overseeing clinical staff, engaging with community partners and schools, assisting with grant writing and quality assurance activities, and providing emergency services and interventions as needed.

What You Will Do

  • Provide clinical and administrative supervision to temporarily licensed clinicians working toward full independent licensure
  • Carry a reduced direct service therapy caseload (percentage based on number of supervisees and program needs)
  • Engage with community members, partner agencies, schools, and other entities to consult on cases, provide education, and increase awareness of services
  • Provide emergency services and crisis interventions as needed
  • Assist with grant writing, quality assurance activities, and other administrative duties as assigned by the Chief Program Officer

What Makes This Different

Your supervisees will not be working in isolation — and neither will you. The organization operates on a team-based care model with direct access to prescribers, case managers, community support staff, and 24/7 crisis response. When a client needs more than therapy, the infrastructure exists to actually help them.

Requirements

Required:

  • Independent licensure: LISW, LMHC, or LMFT
  • 3 years post-licensure experience (required to provide supervision toward licensure for temp-licensed clinicians)
  • Valid driver's license and insurance

Preferred:

  • Prior clinical supervision experience (formal or informal)
  • Bilingual skills — $3,000 pay differential available
  • Familiarity with CCBHC model or community mental health settings

Benefits

  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • 160 hours PTO in year one, with annual increases
  • 7 paid holidays
  • 401(k) with 5% company match
  • Company-paid life insurance
  • Short-term and long-term disability
  • NHSC Loan Repayment — approved site (several employees have received significant forgiveness)
  • Bilingual differential: $3,000
