What Is Clinical Informatics?
Clinical informatics is a field within the discipline of information technology. The purpose of clinical informatics is to implement technology and theories in order to collect, store, and modify clinical information and electronic records to improve patient care and information sharing among healthcare professionals. Clinical informatics investigates the most efficient and user-friendly ways data can be organized, structured, shared, and accessed. It has practical implications for healthcare provision throughout the industry, including at hospitals, clinics, and military and research facilities.

How does a Clinical Informatics professional typically collaborate with healthcare providers and IT teams?
What are some entry level jobs in health informatics?
What is the difference between Clinical Informatics vs Medical Informatics?
| Aspect | Clinical Informatics | Medical Informatics |
|---|---|---|
| Credentials | Often requires certifications like CAHIMS or CPHIMS | Similar certifications, with additional focus on broader healthcare data |
| Work Environment | Hospitals, clinics, healthcare systems | Research institutions, healthcare IT companies, academia |
| Employer & Industry | Healthcare providers, hospitals | Healthcare technology firms, research organizations |
| Search & Comparison Intent | Focuses on clinical settings and patient care | Encompasses broader healthcare data management and policy |
Clinical Informatics primarily concentrates on applying informatics to improve patient care within clinical settings. Medical Informatics has a broader scope, including healthcare data management, research, and policy. Both roles require similar certifications and often overlap in skills, but their focus areas differ based on work environment and industry applications.

The successful candidate will be expected to devote 60-70% of his or her effort to the CIBMTR role. In this strategic leadership position, the successful candidate will be expected to innovate to enhance all aspects of clinical data collection and use as part of the CIBMTR's data pipeline initiatives, working closely with internal teams; and to develop and strengthen the collaborative relationships with network treatment centers and international partners.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead clinical data innovation, covering all aspects of the data lifecycle, to enhance the impact and effectiveness of the CIBMTR registry in achieving its mission
- Partner with US treatment centers to maximize the strengths of registry data collection and use, while reducing burden
- Represent CIBMTR to international registries, influencing the development of globally harmonized clinical definitions and promoting collaborative research
- Collaborate with clinical informatics, disease-specific directors, and CIBMTR leadership.
- Contribute to CIBMTR and MCW's strategic goals, funding growth, high impact publications and development of strategic partnerships.
Clinical Role:
The successful candidate will also have a clinical role in the Division of Hematology and Oncology in our internationally recognized cellular therapy clinical program. The clinical responsibilities include both inpatient care for patients undergoing advanced cellular therapies and a limited outpatient clinic with a focus on allogeneic transplant for myeloid disease. MCW's cellular therapy program serves most of the state of Wisconsin as well as northern Illinois and parts of Michigan. We perform roughly 400 cellular therapy procedures yearly, including autologous and allogeneic transplant, chimeric-antigen T-cell receptor therapy and novel cellular protocols, including cutting edge and first-in-human clinical trials. The physician will be part of a multidisciplinary team and critically involved in the day-to-day management of complex patients. The team includes skilled advanced practice providers, transplant coordinators, nursing staff, pharmacists, and other specialists.
The Division of Hematology and Oncology is a core center member of the Blood and Marrow Transplant Clinical Trials Network (BMT CTN), a lead academic center for the National Clinical Trials Network (NCTN) and an active member of ECOG-ACRIN.
About CIBMTR:

Its longitudinal database currently has information for more than 700,000 patients and receives data for an additional 20-25,000 new patients annually. CIBMTR collaborates with the pharmaceutical and biotech industry through a corporate membership and research service fulfillment portfolio. Currently greater than 80 projects are ongoing in collaboration with more than 40 industry teams. Services provided include scientific expertise, data management and statistical support aligned with use of its real-world data registry supporting impactful industry sponsored projects, including the post-approval safety studies (PASS) for CAR-T, gene therapy and other novel interventions.
Scientific oversight of CIBMTR activities is provided by over 15 MD/PhD Scientific Directors who are faculty in the Departments of either Pediatrics, Medicine or Data Science Institute at MCW, as well as 7 MD/PhD-equivalent Scientific Directors on the NMDP CIBMTR campus. Statistical support is provided by 30 MS statisticians over both campuses and 7 additional faculty PhD statisticians at MCW. An additional ~300 staff provide support for all aspects of CIBMTR's data collection and research activities. Scientific Directors work closely with Operational Directors to provide direction and subject matter expertise. They also work closely with the scientific community, industry, patients, caregivers and other stakeholders to further the mission of the CIBMTR.
Position Requirements:
- Ability to obtain an unrestricted Wisconsin medical license
- Prior experience and training in HCT and/or cellular therapy
- Board certified/board eligible in hematology and oncology by the American Board of Internal Medicine
Successful candidates will have a strong portfolio of research productivity as evidenced by success in grant funding and high impact publications. Experience working with the CIBMTR and formal training in research methodology is preferred but not required.
