Civil Project Engineer

S&ME is looking for an eager and dedicated Civil Project Engineer to join our Civil team in Charlotte, North Carolina.


As a Civil Project Engineer, you will leverage your technical expertise to drive the successful execution of projects for Energy, Industrial, and Government based clients. Your primary focus will be the evaluation and design of projects involving electrical distribution and transmission systems & facilities, natural gas pipelines & facilities, landfills, mining and quarry facilities, earthen dams, water resources, and renewables.

Your Day-to-Day:

  • Conceptual Design & Engineering Analysis: Leading the development of conceptual designs and conducting rigorous engineering analysis of design alternatives.
  • Technical Documentation & Cost Estimating: Overseeing the preparation of detailed drawings, specifications, calculations, and construction cost estimates, ensuring accuracy and compliance with project requirements.
  • Project Management & Coordination: Managing all aspects of project execution, including schedule and budget management, risk assessment, and coordination with internal and external stakeholders.
  • Proposals, Reporting & Client Communication: Taking charge of proposal and report preparation, providing clear and concise communication to clients and stakeholders regarding project progress and milestones.
  • Mentorship & Team Development: Mentoring and guiding junior staff members, sharing your expertise, and fostering their professional growth within the field of civil engineering.

What You Bring:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil or Environmental Engineering or a related field
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience in civil engineering design projects
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or the ability to obtain
  • Solid working knowledge of AutoCAD, Civil3D, and stormwater modeling programs
  • Good business and technical writing skills

Working Conditions and Physical Demands:

You are willing and able to perform the physical demands of this position with the use of Company-provided Personal Protective Equipment, such as:

  • Working outdoors in varying weather conditions
  • Walking over rough, uneven terrain and standing for potentially long periods
  • Routinely lifting and carrying 40-50lbs (field/laboratory samples and equipment)
  • Working outside of normal business hours when necessary
