Duties
Receives and investigates complaints of nuisances and alleged violations, and enforces Property Standards ordinance. Conducts sweeps or systematic, organized, and scheduled inspection surveys of designated areas to identify and seek corrective actions concerning Property Standards violations. Cites property owners, their authorized agents, and/or other legally responsible parties for codes violations, performs re-inspections and actively seeks codes compliance and corrective actions. Interprets Property Standards ordinance for interested city officials, private citizens, and neighborhood groups. Periodically prepares reports on work and other related activities for submission to and review by higher authorities. May appear before and present testimony to various appeals boards, judiciary bodies, and others. Normally works with considerable independence on field inspections, making decisions requiring the use of technical knowledge and judgment. Consults with superiors on more unusual or difficult cases or decisions. Performs related duties as assigned or required.
Minimum Qualifications
1. High School or GED equivalent.
2. Two (2) years experience in the building trades or a related field pertinent to this class.
3. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and other employees; perform various mathematical computations using linear measurement; research for information; write clear, legible and concise reports.
4. Communication skills, both in writing and verbal form.
5. Basic computer skills.
6. Ability to read and interpret plans and specifications.
7. Must possess a valid Louisiana driver's license.
Physical Requirements: Performs frequent, extensive, and prolonged walking over rough and uneven surfaces as well as getting in and out of vehicles multiple times throughout the entire work day. May require regular and prolonged bending, stooping, squatting and kneeling while working confined spaces. Tasks include operation of handheld computer and regular computer equipment. Tasks require lifting and carrying moderately heavy (20-50 pounds) and heavy (50-100 pounds). Tasks require operation of hand tools which involve coordination, strength and manipulative abilities. Requires color, sound, depth and visual perception and discrimination. Must communicate orally.
Work Environment:
Task requires that work be performed in adverse environmental conditions. Inspections may be performed in all types of weather conditions and may be exposed to insects. Will be required to address angry customer in the course of job.
