CHMMs work in industries such as manufacturing, government, healthcare, and environmental consulting. They develop safety protocols, conduct risk assessments, and oversee hazardous waste disposal. Their expertise helps organizations minimize environmental impact and meet regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the Chmm position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CHMM (Certified Hazardous Materials Manager), you need expertise in hazardous materials management, regulatory compliance, environmental science, and a relevant bachelor's degree, often in chemistry, environmental science, or a related field, plus the CHMM certification. Proficiency with environmental management systems, waste tracking software, and safety data management is typical for the role. These qualifications ensure effective, safe, and compliant handling of hazardous materials in a variety of industries.

What are some common challenges faced by a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) in the workplace?

One common challenge for a CHMM is staying current with constantly evolving federal, state, and local regulations governing hazardous materials. CHMMs also manage complex waste disposal logistics, ensure employee safety through training and audits, and mitigate environmental risks under tight deadlines. Collaborating with cross-functional teams, such as EHS (Environmental, Health, and Safety), operations, and regulatory agencies, often requires balancing compliance priorities with operational needs. Overcoming these challenges requires a proactive approach, continuous learning, and effective communication skills, which are highly valued by organizations.

Job Requisition - Byproducts Reuse Navigator
Location: Pittsburgh, PA (Hybrid or fully remote)
The Byproducts Reuse Navigator will be responsible for helping our industrial sites find reuse and recycling outlets for their hazardous secondary materials, supplemental cementitious materials, and other industrial byproducts with value in other industries. Whether you call it creative recycling, zero waste strategy, byproduct synergy, industrial symbiosis, or common sense, we have residual industrial materials that need to find their next use and these could be seen in liquids, solids or somewhere in between, they could be hazardous or benign, and they could be by the railcar or roll-off or smaller volumes depending on the location. We know these materials have continued value in a circular economy, as we have found solutions in other parts of the world for the same materials. This is envisioned as a part-time role for 2026 (up to 30 hours/week) and intended to prove the business case for a continuing or full-time role. We are not talking packaging and plastics or food waste, its more about acids and base , ceramics and aggregates, baghouse dust, and filter cake.
With a focus on guiding different material streams to reuse or recycling partners, this role could develop their own process to describe the materials, explore other industries, make connections, and prove the business case, over and over again in different regions. The role will be responsible for the end-to-end process including initial implementation of the re-use/recycling solution.
The Ideal Candidate:
Prior experience finding reuse outlets for industrial byproducts, residual materials, and hazardous secondary materials.
A Total Resource Use and Efficiency (TRUE) Advisor certification and/or CHMM (both is a plus)

An understanding of logistics cost and documenting the full business case for the selected solution
See the benefits and logic for moving towards a more effective circular economy

Prior experience with industrial hazardous waste in heavy industries
Proficient in developing business cases to support the reuse initiatives and can be technical enough to understand the chemical analyses of the materials

Certified Hazardous Materials Manager (CHMM) Certification
Strong capabilities in practical environmental compliance in heavy industrial operations, as well as a keen interest and experience in driving environmental sustainability performance forward across a global organization
