Job description

Major Purpose: 

The Chief Cook is to oversee the preparation of all food while maintaining the highest standards of food safety in all aspects of an ocean-going vessel’s galley operations.

Responsibilities / Job Duties:  

  • Participate in training, drills, and exercises.
  • Clean and sanitize work area, equipment, utensils, dishes, and silverware
  • Record inventory of consumables (food and sanitary)
  • Maintain appropriate levels of all inventory items
  • Communicate with shore-side support personnel for all additional items needed
  • Prepare a variety of food for a crew of 19 in accordance with USCG and Savage Marine Management System food handling provisions and procedures
  • Plan and utilize food stores effectively
  • Oversee the appropriate treatment of garbage and other waste and ensure appropriate disposal

Requirements/Qualifications: 

  • USCG MMC endorsement
  • Chief Cook Department (F.H.) endorsement
  • All Required STCW endorsements for a chemical tanker capable of foreign voyages
  • Must have a valid TWIC card and Passport
  • Other certificates and endorsements as deemed required for the operation and by Savage Marine
  • Good communication skills
  • Self-motivated and proactive
  • Proven and effective manager and leader

Education/Experience: Enter bullet format of specific education and experience that is required.

  • High School diploma
  • ABS Nautical Systems NS5 experience preferred

Physical Requirements:

Able to work in confined spaces, carrying heavy tools, climbing and descending ladders, consistently asked to lift and carry loads greater than 25 pounds

Must have current USCG medical certificate, renewed every 2 years
