What are Chief Architects?

Chief Architects are senior-level professionals responsible for overseeing the architectural design and technical vision of an organization's systems, products, or infrastructure. They set the overall strategy for technology and ensure that all solutions align with business goals and standards. Chief Architects work closely with stakeholders, development teams, and other architects to guide projects, manage technical risks, and maintain the integrity of the enterprise architecture. Their role often involves evaluating emerging technologies, establishing best practices, and ensuring long-term scalability and security.

How does a Chief Architect typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during large-scale projects?

A Chief Architect plays a central role in coordinating with product managers, developers, operations, and business stakeholders to ensure architectural alignment with organizational goals. They facilitate technical discussions, mediate between different teams to resolve architectural challenges, and provide guidance on best practices. By maintaining open communication and regular check-ins, the Chief Architect ensures that project requirements are clearly understood and technical solutions are scalable and maintainable, fostering a collaborative and efficient work environment.

The main difference is that a Chief Architect holds a higher-level leadership role, overseeing overall architectural strategies across multiple projects or departments, while a Software Architect focuses on designing specific software solutions within projects. Both roles require strong technical skills and relevant certifications, but the Chief Architect's responsibilities include strategic planning and team leadership at an organizational level.

What Is a Chief Architect?

A chief architect manages a project, focusing on the strategic and visual components. Their duties include designing structures that are safe and visually pleasing. People in this career often strive to create cost-effective and environmentally-friendly buildings. Qualifications include a bachelor’s or master’s degree in architectural engineering. They also need math and drafting skills, and mastery of computer engineering software. Job seekers usually serve an internship to gain experience before taking the Architect Registration Exam, a requirement in all states.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Chief Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Architect, you need deep expertise in systems architecture, software engineering, and solution design, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with architectural frameworks (like TOGAF), cloud platforms (such as AWS or Azure), and enterprise modeling tools is typically required. Strong leadership, strategic thinking, and communication skills are crucial for guiding teams and aligning technology with business goals. Job description

About the Organization
Now is a great time to join Redhorse Corporation. We are a solution-driven company delivering data insights and technology solutions to customers with missions critical to U.S. national interests. We’re looking for thoughtful, skilled professionals who thrive as trusted partners building technology-agnostic solutions and want to apply their talents supporting customers with difficult and important mission sets.

About the Role

Redhorse transforms the way government uses data and technology. To support this mission, we are seeking a Chief Architect to lead the technical design and evolution of high-impact data solutions for our government partners. In this role, you will be the visionary behind the overarching technical direction of our most critical projects, ensuring that architectural solutions are secure, scalable, and mission-aligned. By leveraging your expertise in Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) and cloud-native services, you will directly influence how the government incorporates AI, machine learning, and advanced data processing into national security missions. If you are a collaborative leader committed to technical excellence and fostering inclusive engineering environments, this is the role for you.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead the overarching technical design and architecture, ensuring all solutions align with customer requirements and mission-critical objectives.
  • Provide strategic technical direction and integrate architectural best practices across all solution components.
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of comprehensive technical documentation, including architecture diagrams, design specifications, and governance standards.
  • Design, develop, and document data collection capabilities and cloud-based services to enhance mission effectiveness.
  • Drive continuous innovation and optimization in the design and deployment of large-scale collection capabilities.
  • Evaluate and integrate emerging technologies—including AI, machine learning, and cloud computing—to improve the security and agility of operations.
  • Collaborate with program leadership and diverse stakeholders to translate mission needs into actionable technical requirements and architecture plans.
  • Foster a collaborative environment by providing mentorship, guidance, and professional development to engineering and development teams.
  • Conduct rigorous architectural reviews to ensure compliance with federal security standards and frameworks.
Required Experience/Clearance
  • Active TS/SCI security clearance with a Full-Scope Polygraph.
  • 10+ years of professional experience in systems architecture.
  • Proven experience designing, developing, and documenting cloud-based data collection capabilities.
  • 5+ years of experience leading innovation and optimization efforts in the deployment of technical collection capabilities.
  • Demonstrated experience architecting and implementing solutions utilizing AI, Machine Learning, and cloud computing within an OSE (Open Source Environment) or mission context.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Information Technology, or a related technical discipline.
  • Proven ability to communicate complex technical concepts to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Desired Skills
  • Professional-level architecture certification in AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Experience leading multi-disciplinary architecture teams within the Intelligence Community (IC) or Department of Defense (DoD).
  • Hands-on experience with containerization technologies such as Kubernetes and Docker.
  • Familiarity with microservices architecture and cloud-native design patterns.
  • Practical familiarity with DevSecOps practices, CI/CD pipelines, and Infrastructure-as-Code (IaC).
  • Experience designing and managing data engineering pipelines and large-scale data processing architectures.
  • A demonstrated commitment to building and supporting diverse technical teams through inclusive mentorship.
