How much do interior architecture designer jobs pay per year?

As of Jun 17, 2026, the average yearly pay for interior architecture designer in the United States is $72,849.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $58,000.00 and $83,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

Who gets paid more, an interior architect or an architect?

Architects generally earn higher salaries than interior architects because they have broader responsibilities, require more extensive licensure, and often work on larger-scale projects. Interior architects focus on interior spaces and may have specialized skills in design software, but their salaries tend to be lower than those of licensed architects. Salary differences can vary based on experience, location, and firm size.

What does an interior architect designer do?

An interior architecture designer plans and designs interior spaces, focusing on both aesthetics and functionality. They create detailed layouts, select materials, and collaborate with clients and contractors to ensure the design meets safety standards and project requirements, often using tools like CAD software.

Can an architect do interior design work?

An architect can perform interior design work as both professions involve designing interior spaces, but architects typically focus on the building's structure and systems. Many architects are qualified to handle interior design projects, especially if they have additional training or certification in interior design. However, some interior designers specialize exclusively in interior spaces and may have different licensing requirements.

What is the difference between Interior Architecture Designer vs Interior Designer?

AspectInterior Architecture DesignerInterior Designer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in interior architecture or related field, with certification or licensing depending on regionUsually holds a degree in interior design, with certification or licensing optional based on location
Work EnvironmentWorks on structural and spatial planning, often collaborating with architects and engineersFocuses on aesthetics, furnishings, and decor, working directly with clients
Industry UsageCommonly employed in architectural firms, design studios, and construction projectsFound in design firms, retail, residential, and commercial projects

While both roles involve creating functional and aesthetic interior spaces, Interior Architecture Designers focus more on structural and spatial planning, often requiring technical knowledge of building systems. Interior Designers primarily concentrate on decor, furnishings, and visual appeal. Understanding these differences helps clients choose the right professional for their project needs.

How does an Interior Architecture Designer typically collaborate with other professionals during a project?

Interior Architecture Designers work closely with a variety of professionals, including architects, engineers, contractors, and clients. Collaboration often involves participating in design meetings, coordinating with structural and MEP (mechanical, electrical, and plumbing) teams to ensure plans are feasible, and translating client needs into functional, aesthetic spaces. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as designers must balance creative vision with technical constraints and regulatory requirements throughout the project lifecycle.

What does an Interior Architecture Designer do?

An Interior Architecture Designer is responsible for designing and planning the interior spaces of buildings, focusing on both aesthetics and functionality. They work closely with clients to understand their needs and preferences, then create layouts, select materials, and coordinate with contractors to bring the vision to life. Unlike traditional interior decorators, they often address structural elements, space planning, and building codes. Their goal is to create environments that are both beautiful and practical, enhancing how people experience and use a space.

What can you do with an interior design and architecture degree?

An interior architecture designer with this degree can work in designing and planning interior spaces for residential, commercial, or institutional projects. They can pursue roles such as space planner, design consultant, or project manager, often using tools like AutoCAD or Revit. Licensing or certification may be required for certain positions, especially those involving building codes and safety standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Interior Architecture Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Interior Architecture Designer, you need a solid background in architecture or interior design, supported by a relevant degree and often licensure or certification (such as NCIDQ). Proficiency in design software like AutoCAD, Revit, SketchUp, and Adobe Creative Suite is typically essential for creating detailed plans and presentations. Strong communication, creativity, and project management skills help you collaborate effectively with clients, contractors, and multidisciplinary teams. These skills ensure functional, aesthetic, and compliant spaces that meet client needs and industry standards.
