What is a chief technology officer?

A Chief Technology Officer (CTO) is a senior executive responsible for overseeing an organization's technological direction and strategy. They lead the development and implementation of technology solutions to support business goals, often managing IT teams and collaborating with other executives. CTOs evaluate new technologies, ensure the security of information systems, and drive innovation to maintain a competitive edge. Their role is vital in aligning technology initiatives with the company's vision and ensuring efficient, scalable tech operations.

What does a chief technology officer do?

As a chief technology officer, you manage the technical aspects of your company. In your role as CTO, you may provide leadership for a technology department, help execute a technology strategy, and coordinate with other executive managers to better understand what the company needs and how that should fit into various plans and budgets. Chief technology officers often establish a technical vision, study leading-edge technologies, ensure data security, and help analyze target markets and business models. Depending on the needs of the company, chief technology officers may specialize in specific areas or focus more on software and intellectual property than systems and hardware.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a chief technology officer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Chief Technology Officer, you need extensive experience in software development, IT infrastructure, and strategic leadership, often supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with enterprise architecture, cloud platforms, cybersecurity frameworks, and agile methodologies—as well as certifications like PMP or AWS—are commonly utilized in this role. Exceptional communication, visionary leadership, and the ability to drive innovation are critical soft skills for success. These capabilities ensure the organization leverages technology strategically to achieve business goals and maintain a competitive edge.

How does a chief technology officer typically collaborate with other executive leaders to align technology strategy with business goals?

A Chief Technology Officer (CTO) works closely with other executives such as the CEO, COO, and CFO to ensure that the technology roadmap supports the overall business strategy. This collaboration often involves participating in leadership meetings, translating business needs into technical requirements, and providing input on major product or operational initiatives. CTOs also bridge communication between technical teams and non-technical stakeholders, helping to prioritize projects and investments that drive growth. This cross-functional partnership is vital for aligning innovation with organizational objectives and ensuring resources are allocated effectively.

Chief Technology Officer (CTO)

Mira Safety

Cedar Park, TX • On-site

Full-time

Medical, Dental, Vision, Life, PTO

Posted 4 days ago

Job description

Who We Are

At MIRA Safety, our mission is simple: uncompromising protection.

We are a marketing and distribution company specializing in high-quality personal protective equipment, including professional-grade gas masks, filters, hazmat suits, and survival gear designed to protect against chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear threats.

From military and law enforcement professionals to first responders, agricultural workers, and everyday citizens, we design durable, reliable equipment with one goal in mind: saving lives.

The Opportunity

MIRA Safety is seeking an exceptional Chief Technology Officer (CTO) to lead the company's technology, artificial intelligence, software engineering, automation, and e-commerce infrastructure.

This is not a traditional CTO role centered primarily on managing an engineering department. We are looking for a highly technical, hands-on builder and technology leader who understands how modern AI can fundamentally change the way a company operates, sells, serves customers, and scales.

The ideal candidate combines three critical areas of expertise:

  1. Modern AI and AI agent development
  2. Shopify and high-performance e-commerce
  3. Full-stack software engineering and systems architecture

The CTO will work directly with executive leadership to make MIRA Safety an AI-first, highly automated, technology-driven organization.

What You'll Own

The CTO will own MIRA Safety's overall technology strategy and execution, including:

  • Artificial intelligence strategy, AI agents, and autonomous workflows
  • Shopify and e-commerce technology
  • Website, application, and internal software development
  • Business-process automation
  • APIs and third-party integrations
  • Data infrastructure and analytics
  • Cloud infrastructure and DevOps
  • Cybersecurity and data protection
  • Engineering architecture and standards
  • Technical hiring, team leadership, and technology partners

A major priority will be reducing fragmented systems and creating a cohesive technology architecture across MIRA Safety:

Shopify → ERP → CRM → Inventory → Fulfillment → Customer Service → Marketing → Analytics → AI

The goal is to establish a reliable data and automation layer so information moves automatically and intelligently between systems.

AI & Automation

Deep, practical AI expertise is a core requirement for this position.

We are not looking for someone whose AI experience consists primarily of using ChatGPT.

The CTO should understand how to design, build, deploy, and maintain production AI systems, including AI agents and agentic workflows, LLM APIs, tool/function calling, MCP integrations, RAG, vector databases, structured outputs, prompt and context engineering, AI memory systems, model evaluation, security, and data governance.

The CTO will identify opportunities to deploy AI and automation across customer support, sales, marketing, e-commerce, content, SEO, data analysis, inventory, supply chain, internal knowledge management, and employee productivity.

The objective is not simply to purchase more AI software. The CTO will be expected to build an integrated AI infrastructure in which agents, software, APIs, company data, and employees work together to dramatically increase organizational productivity.

Shopify & E-Commerce

MIRA Safety operates a significant direct-to-consumer e-commerce business, making deep Shopify expertise essential.

The CTO should have strong technical experience with Shopify / Shopify Plus, Liquid, Shopify APIs, GraphQL, custom Shopify applications, Shopify Functions, checkout extensibility, webhooks, theme development, headless commerce, ERP and CRM integrations, fulfillment systems, analytics, conversion-rate optimization, Core Web Vitals, and e-commerce security.

The CTO will ensure MIRA Safety's e-commerce technology is fast, reliable, secure, scalable, highly automated, and optimized for revenue growth.

Software Engineering & Architecture

The CTO must have a strong software engineering foundation, with experience across technologies such as JavaScript / TypeScript, Python, Node.js, React / Next.js, SQL, REST APIs, GraphQL, relational and NoSQL databases, Git / GitHub, CI/CD, and cloud infrastructure.

This person does not need to personally write every line of MIRA Safety's code. However, the CTO must be capable of architecting systems, reviewing code, challenging engineering decisions, diagnosing technical problems, and personally building prototypes or production systems when necessary.

We want a CTO who can still build.

Leadership & Strategy

The CTO will:

  • Develop MIRA Safety's long-term technology and AI roadmap
  • Translate business objectives into technical architecture
  • Build and manage a high-performing technology team
  • Recruit and evaluate engineers, AI developers, and technical specialists
  • Establish engineering, testing, deployment, documentation, and monitoring standards
  • Evaluate SaaS platforms, AI vendors, agencies, and technology partners
  • Make intelligent build-vs-buy decisions
  • Establish technology budgets based on business ROI
  • Strengthen cybersecurity, access controls, and data protection
  • Communicate technical opportunities and risks clearly to executive leadership
What You Bring

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Significant software engineering and technology leadership experience
  • Hands-on experience building AI-powered applications and agentic systems
  • Strong understanding of LLM architecture and APIs
  • Deep Shopify and e-commerce technical knowledge
  • Full-stack development and systems architecture experience
  • Experience designing APIs, integrations, and scalable software systems
  • Experience with cloud infrastructure, cybersecurity, and data governance
  • Experience managing developers and technical vendors
  • Excellent business judgment and communication skills
  • Ability to operate in a fast-moving entrepreneurial environment

We are particularly interested in a builder-CTO rather than a purely managerial CTO—someone who naturally asks:

Can we automate this? Can an AI agent do this? Why aren't these systems connected? Can we build this better ourselves? How does this technology increase revenue, reduce costs, improve the customer experience, or make the company faster?

What Success Looks Like

The CTO will progressively:

  • Establish a clear technology and AI roadmap
  • Modernize and document MIRA Safety's technology architecture
  • Significantly increase automation across departments
  • Deploy production-grade AI agents for high-value business processes
  • Improve Shopify performance, reliability, conversion capabilities, and integrations
  • Create a unified data infrastructure across major business systems
  • Improve engineering velocity, software quality, and cybersecurity
  • Turn AI and software into a measurable competitive advantage for MIRA Safety
What We Offer
  • Compensation: TBD
  • Comprehensive health, dental, and vision insurance, with the company covering 75 percent of the employee’s base individual plan premium
  • Optional life, hospital, critical illness, and accident insurance
  • Generous paid time off and sick leave
  • Nine paid holidays

Employees based at our Cedar Park, Texas office also enjoy access to on-site amenities including a gym, private soundproof pods, sauna, ice plunge, red light therapy, a game room, a fully stocked break room, and fresh eggs from our on-site chicken farm.

As part of the application process, candidates will be asked to complete the Culture Index survey.

MIRA Safety is an Equal Opportunity Employer. We value diversity and are committed to creating an inclusive environment for all employees. We do not discriminate based on race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, national origin, age, disability, veteran status, or any other legally protected status.
