Job description

Zachry Engineering Corporation (ZEC) is searching for a Process Engineer IV to work out of our Houston Westchase Design Center. The Process Engineer will perform routine engineering and design tasks of the process area of assigned projects based on specific and detailed instructions as to the required tasks, results expected, specific assignment objectives, complex features, and possible solutions. Process Engineer will independently evaluate, select, and apply standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications.

  • Bachelor's Degree in Chemical Engineering
  • 7-15 years of experience 
  • Experience applying standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Experience in PFD and P&ID development, and participation in HAZOP/LOPA studies
  • Proficient in H&MB development, equipment and instrumentation process specification and performing hydraulic analysis
  • Good Communication Skills (Active Listening, Verbal, and Written)
  • Ability to adapt to changing client requirements while defining a new path and remaining a positive role model for the team
  • Excellent Attention to Detail - in own work as well as demonstrated in checking work of others
  • Proven history of meeting schedule commitments and planning resources required
  • Judgment and Decision Making
  • Proficient with Process Engineering Software (AspenTech suite preferred)
  • Strong desire to learn
  • Licensed Professional Engineer
  • Experience as a Process Engineer in the gas processing and/or refining industries
  • Experience in the Power Industry and Water Treatment Technologies
  • Experience in gas purification technologies such as Pressure Swing Adsorption, Membrane separation, or others
  • Experience with designing OSBL/Utility scopes required to support Licensor provided ISBL packages
  • Past exposure to environmental permitting and citing studies

Preferred Qualifications 

Physical Requirements

  • Employee will be required to communicate in person, via telephone, email, video chat and software systems.
  • Position will include visits to construction sites and industrial facilities requiring mobility (on ground and at heights) and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) including but not limited to: hard hat, safety glasses/goggles, ear plugs/muffs, masks/respirators, safety vests, gloves and work boots.

Work environment

  • Employee will work in multiple environments including an office, warehouse, and trailer or building on construction sites.
  • On construction sites, noise levels will be moderate to high. Job site will contain: light to heavy equipment vehicles, small to large equipment, materials, communication equipment and tools, people standing, walking, sitting, signaling and talking, bells, whistles and alarms.

  • Responsible for developing process flow diagrams (PFD) and piping & instrumentation diagrams (P&ID).
  • Responsible for sizing and rating various equipment like pumps, horizontal and vertical vessels, heat exchangers, and air coolers.
  • Responsible for performing hydraulic analysis and calculations for piping systems. Experience to include evaluating systems involving single phase, two phase, slurries, water hammer, slug flow, and distribution networks. Tools required should range from spreadsheet through rigorous software evaluations.
  • Knowledge of water chemistry application including treatment of raw water, demineralized water,  and wastewater.  Knowledge of cycle chemistry for condensate systems and cooling systems in Combined Cycle power plants. 
  • Capable of supervising, coordinating, and reviewing work of a small staff of engineers to accomplish project objectives.
  • Mentors younger engineers, leading by example. Supports department development initiatives and standards creation/review/update.
  • Participate in various client Process Hazard Analysis reviews (i.e. risk review, HAZID, HAZOP/LOPA).
  • Responsible for design of relief system, flare header design, relief valve sizing and performing contingency analysis and flare header analysis.
  • Evaluates, selects, and applies standard engineering techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making adaptations and modifications.
  • Present technical information to peers (internal or external) for review and comment.
  • Evaluate equipment and processes to ensure compliance with safety and environmental regulations.
  • Must maintain active status in a drug and/or alcohol testing consortium
  • Other duties, as assigned.
