What is a change coordinator?

Change Coordinators are professionals responsible for managing and overseeing changes within an organization’s IT systems, processes, or infrastructure. They ensure that changes are planned, documented, communicated, and implemented smoothly to minimize disruption and risk. Change Coordinators often work as part of the IT service management team and facilitate the Change Advisory Board (CAB) meetings to review and approve proposed changes. Their main goal is to ensure that all changes are controlled and aligned with business objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a change coordinator, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Change Coordinator, you need strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and knowledge of IT service management processes, often supported by a relevant degree or ITIL certification. Familiarity with change management tools like ServiceNow or BMC Remedy is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and stakeholder management skills help you coordinate effectively across teams. These competencies ensure smooth implementation of changes, minimize disruptions, and support organizational stability.

What does a change coordinator do?

A Change Coordinator often manages several change requests simultaneously, prioritizing them based on business impact, urgency, and risk assessment. To ensure minimal disruption, they coordinate closely with IT teams, stakeholders, and end users to schedule changes during low-traffic periods and communicate timelines clearly. They use structured frameworks like ITIL to streamline processes and conduct thorough impact analyses before approving changes. Effective organization, clear documentation, and proactive communication are key to navigating this challenging aspect of the role.
