Overview

Be part of the nation's only repository for the disposal of nuclear waste known as Transuranic (TRU) waste.

Salado Isolation Mining Contractors, LLC (SIMCO), managing and operating contractor of the Waste Isolation Pilot Plant (WIPP) is currently seeking a qualified individual to serve as a Central Characterization Program (CCP) Transportation Certification Official (TCO) to join our team located at the Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), in Los Alamos, New Mexico.

This is a full-time position primarily located on-site at LANL; however, it may also require heavy domestic travel based on schedule and resource demands. The standard work schedule for this position is Monday through Thursday; 10-hour days.

Responsibilities

The successful candidate will:

  • Complete necessary training to obtain qualification as CCP Transportation Certification Official.

  • Complete necessary training to obtain qualifications for Contact Handling (CH)/(RH) Remote Handling Packaging Operations, Incidental Rigger, and Helium Leak Detection.

  • Interface with working groups and customers from outside organizations as needed to complete work scope.

  • Responsible for ensuring compliant packaging operations, payload assembly and certification functions related to the shipment of Transuranic (TRU) Mixed Waste.

  • Ensure compliant closure of Nuclear Regulatory Commission approved Type B packaging in accordance with the package specific Certificate of Compliance.

  • Provide direction to assigned personnel regarding execution of work scope.

  • Responsible for technical reviews of characterization/certification data collected from a broad range of waste characterization processes to determine whether the waste meets the WIPP Waste Acceptance Criteria, and/or TRAMPAC requirements.

  • Conduct and perform daily shift briefings and report daily plans and priorities to CCP management.

  • Mentor team members and provide opportunities for professional development.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with (5) years of relevant experience, or

  • Associate's degree with nine (9) years of relevant experience, or

  • High School Diploma or Equivalency with thirteen (13) years of relevant experience is required.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of operational safety, conduct of operations, and quality assurance programs.

  • Previous experience with nuclear and/or hazardous waste/materials.

  • Must be able to obtain and maintain a "Q" Clearance.

  • Ability to negotiate stairs, ladders and platforms.

  • Ability to manage prolonged standing, extensive walking, and lifting/carrying heavily weighted items (up to 50 lbs).

  • Ability to work in various weather conditions.

  • Ability to manage heavy domestic travel.

Must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

Preferred Requirements

  • Basic skill in researching, and recommending alternative solutions to problems associated with the management, disposition, coordination, packaging, movement, storage, quality control and/or transportation of TRU Waste.

  • Excellent interpersonal, verbal and written communication and the ability to interact with a variety of constituents.

  • Demonstrated working knowledge of CCP TRU Waste Characterization activities and equipment.

  • Previous experience with Nondestructive Examination techniques.

  • One (1) year in a supervisory role.

Exempt grade level(s) 31-33. Salary range: $87,312 to $154,567 per year --the specific salary offered to a candidate will be influenced by a variety of factors, particularly the candidate's relevant experience and education.
