About This Position:
The primary purpose of this position is to assist the District Traffic Operations Engineer (Engineer 7) and Engineer 6 in managing and directing all district traffic engineering activities. This position is located in District 62, Unit 002, of the Department of Transportation and Development and reports directly to the Engineer 6 of the District Traffic Operations. This position is responsible for all traffic related matters within the six parishes that form District 62. The incumbent must be self-motivated, must be able to perform duties with minimal supervision, and also be able to interpret unforeseen conditions as they may arise. The incumbent will participate in DOTD structured training programs as appropriate; will attend conferences and other educational opportunities as necessary to obtain the continuing education hours required to maintain PE Certification and performance of required tasks.
This position assists the Traffic Operations Engineers in managing and directing all district traffic engineering activities. Position is located in Hammond, District 62 Unit 002 and reports to the Engineer 6.
Preference will be given to applicants that have passed the Fundamentals of Engineering (FE) Exam.

Minimum Qualifications
Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
NOTE:
This is a temporary position to be utilized while the incumbent is securing a Louisiana Engineer Intern certificate. Permanent status shall be denied to incumbents occupying this position.
NOTE:
Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificates are issued by the Louisiana Professional Engineering and Land Surveying Board. Licensing requirements may be viewed at www.lapels.com.

Job Duties and Other Information
Job Duties:
  • Conducts and analyzes traffic engineering studies for a six-parish area, including evaluating requests for new or revised traffic control devices and producing engineering reports.
  • Leads traffic section personnel and oversees data collection, computer-based analysis, and recommendations for signals, signs, striping, and traffic design.
  • Inspects traffic control devices for compliance with MUTCD/state standards and recommends corrections through reports or memoranda.
  • Reviews and approves development-related impact studies, access connection requests, accident data analyses, and traffic control plans for construction projects.
  • Maintains official records, prepares Secretary's Orders, participates in meetings and training, supports litigation preparation, and performs additional or emergency duties as needed.

Position-Specific Details:
Appointment Type: This position may be filled as either a probational appointment (open to all qualified applicants); a promotion (open to all statewide classified and Agency-wide permanent status employees); or by detail to special duty.
Career Progression: This position is part of a Career Progression Group and may be filled as an Engineer Intern Applicant, Engineer Intern 1, or Engineer Intern 2 based on qualifications and agency needs.
Compensation:
  • Engineer Intern Applicant - $24.04/hourly - Eligibility for a Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate.
  • Engineer Intern 1 - Special Entrance Rate (SER) $26.44/hourly. Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate
  • Engineer Intern 2 - Special Entrance Rate (SER) $28.29/ hourly. Possession of a current Louisiana Engineer Intern Certificate plus one year of professional engineering experience.
