Job description

PURPOSE OF POSITION
  • The purpose of this position is to ensure that specimens are being registered, ordered, and processed correctly according to established policies and procedures.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND EXPECTATIONS
  • Work closely with the ALS, Microbiology, Virology, and Send Out departments to make sure that specimens are being registered, ordered, and processed correctly.
  • Scan requisitions into Cerner.
  • Answer phones and provide excellent customer service.
  • Perform accurate patient and insurance data entry into Cerner.
  • Order lab work from OPD, ALS and CareEvolve requisitions
  • Properly process and prepare specimens for testing
  • Load the automated track according to established guidelines
  • Centrifuge and separate specimens according to test requirements
  • Aliquot as necessary
  • Monitor and empty tube system punctually, checking for stats and prioritizing work
  • Uphold and follow all hospital and department policies and procedures
  • Adhere to all established safety and Infection Control Policies
  • Maintain instrumentation/equipment in good working order
  • Provide technical information to laboratory "customers" and appropriately direct questions to the Unit Director and/or other Technical Specialists as indicated
  • Uphold and practice the highest level of professional integrity in all daily work functions, including confidentiality of patient records
  • Assists in projects or other tasks assigned by the Unit Director
  • Troubleshoot problems that arise
  • Other duties as assigned by the Supervisor, Assistant Manager, or Unit Director.

EDUCATIONAL/EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
  • High School Graduate or equivalent
  • Must have some experience with medical terminology
  • Must have basic computer skills
  • Must be able to multi-task and maintain focus on duties.
  • Must be able to communicate effectively with peers, management, and other healthcare personnel

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Department Hours: 24 hours/day, 365 days/year
  • Work hours are assigned by the Supervisor, Assistant Manager, or Unit Director and can be on any shift depending upon the staffing needs of the department
  • Requires Saturday/Sunday and Holiday rotation
  • Requires occasional paid overtime before or after normal working hours, if approved
  • Works in a well-lighted and ventilated laboratory
