What to expect working as a case manager?

A case manager provides aid and guidance for clients who need social services or other assistance. As a case manager, you assess the needs of each client through one-on-one conversation, documents, and research and then connect them with the appropriate agency, person, or service best equipped to help. You can coordinate medical or mental health care services, recommend economic assistance programs, or help with issues such as housing, childcare, or personal development. Your duties and responsibilities also include meeting with clients to track their progress and adjust goals and plans if necessary.

What does a case manager do?

A case manager helps clients access services and support tailored to their needs, such as healthcare, housing, or social services. While many positions prefer candidates with experience, entry-level case management jobs do exist, especially in organizations that provide training. Having a background in social work, psychology, or a related field can be helpful, but strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills are often more important. Volunteering or internships can also help you gain relevant experience. Employers may provide on-the-job training for those new to the field.

What types of support and training are typically provided to new case managers with no prior experience?

New Case Managers who are just starting out often benefit from comprehensive onboarding programs, which may include shadowing experienced colleagues, participating in formal training sessions, and receiving regular supervision. Many organizations also offer ongoing professional development and access to resources like documentation templates and client management systems to ease the learning curve. It's common for new hires to start with a manageable caseload and gradually take on more responsibility as they build confidence and skills. Team collaboration is strongly emphasized, so you can expect frequent meetings and opportunities to consult with peers and supervisors when facing challenging cases.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a case manager with no prior experience?

To thrive as a Case Manager with no experience, you need at least a bachelor’s degree in social work, psychology, or a related field, along with strong organizational and problem-solving skills. Familiarity with case management software, client documentation systems, and basic Microsoft Office tools is helpful. Effective communication, empathy, and the ability to build rapport with clients and colleagues are standout soft skills. These abilities are crucial for successfully coordinating services, advocating for clients, and ensuring positive outcomes in diverse and sometimes challenging environments.

What qualifications do I need to become a case manager?

To become a case manager, relevant qualifications typically include a high school diploma or equivalent, with many roles preferring or requiring a bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, or a related field. Certification such as the Certified Case Manager (CCM) or similar credentials can enhance job prospects, and strong communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills are essential for success in this role.

Can I be a case manager without experience?

Entry-level case manager positions often do not require prior experience, but they typically require strong communication, organizational skills, and relevant certifications such as a social work license or training. Employers may provide on-the-job training to help new hires develop necessary skills for managing client cases effectively.

Job description

Ready to Hang Up the Scrubs?
Become a Medical Case Manager – No Prior Workers' Comp Experience Required
MUST RESIDE IN THE SF BAY AREA
Spanish-speaking candidates may be eligible for a special skills bonus!
Are you craving a more supportive, less stressful, patient-centered work environment—one where doing the right thing truly matters? What if your next job allowed you to work from your home office and still make a meaningful impact every day?
Choices Case Management is offering a rare opportunity for an experienced Registered Nurse ready to transition from traditional clinical settings into the specialized field of Workers’ Compensation Medical Case Management.
This is a training position designed for RNs without prior workers’ comp experience. The role is field-based from your home office and includes local travel to medical provider offices.
Why This Role?
Our Medical Case Management Training Program equips dedicated RNs with the knowledge, tools, and mentorship needed to launch a successful career in workers’ comp case management—focusing more on care coordination and less on bureaucracy. You’ll enjoy a Monday–Friday schedule, no bedside care, and no weekends or holidays.
About CHOICES:
We are a nurse-founded, nurse-owned, and nurse-managed company with a mission to support RNs in delivering high-quality, ethical medical case management. We:
  • Emphasize nurse autonomy, support, and professional integrity
  • Offer the stability of a long-established company with a tight-knit, family-oriented team culture
  • Provide big-company benefits in a boutique setting
  • Foster a culture where employee satisfaction and work-life balance are top priorities
What We’re Looking For:
  • California Licensed RN
  • Strong clinical experience and critical thinking skills
  • Excellent communication and documentation abilities
  • Willingness to travel locally to provider appointments (approx. 60%)
  • A desire to grow into a long-term professional case management career
What You’ll Receive:
  • Full benefits package
  • Competitive starting salary plus bonus potential
  • Extensive training and mentorship
  • The flexibility of working from home while serving your local community
If you’re a seasoned RN feeling overworked and underappreciated, and ready to get back to the heart of nursing in a non-bedside role—let’s start the conversation. Send us your resume today and discover the CHOICES difference.
