What is a CAPM?

A CAPM job typically refers to entry-level project management roles that require or prefer the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) certification. The CAPM certification, offered by PMI (Project Management Institute), validates foundational knowledge of project management principles, processes, and terminology. Professionals with this certification may work as project coordinators, project assistants, or junior project managers, supporting teams in planning, executing, and monitoring projects. It is an excellent stepping stone for those looking to advance into more senior project management roles.

What does a CAPM do?

As a CAPM, you’ll typically support project managers by assisting with scheduling, coordinating resources, tracking progress, and managing documentation for various projects. Your daily responsibilities may include updating project timelines, preparing status reports, facilitating team meetings, and ensuring that project milestones are met on time. Most CAPMs work in collaborative environments, often communicating with cross-functional teams and stakeholders to keep projects moving smoothly. Over time, hands-on experience in this role can open up opportunities for advancement to higher-level positions in project management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CAPM?

To thrive as a CAPM (Certified Associate in Project Management), you need a solid understanding of project management principles, problem-solving abilities, and a relevant educational background—often paired with CAPM certification. Familiarity with project management software such as Microsoft Project, Jira, or Trello is typically required. Strong organizational skills, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset are key soft skills that support success in this role. These skills enable CAPMs to efficiently assist project managers, keep projects on track, and contribute positively to team objectives.

Can I get a job with a CAPM?

A Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) can help you qualify for entry-level project management roles across various industries. Employers often look for the CAPM certification, along with relevant skills and experience, to demonstrate foundational project management knowledge. However, job availability also depends on factors like location, industry demand, and your overall experience.

Is CAPM entry-level?

Yes, the Certified Associate in Project Management (CAPM) is considered an entry-level certification for project managers. It is designed for individuals with little to no project management experience and typically requires a high school diploma or equivalent and some project management education or experience. The CAPM helps demonstrate foundational knowledge of project management principles and tools.

Is the Certified Associate in Project Management worth getting?

Job description

  • Successfully leads and manages large and/or complex Dynamics 365 projects, including multi‑workload implementations including integrations, ISVs, and AI requirements, with a strong focus on client outcomes and value realization

  • Acts as a trusted advisor and thought partner to client leadership, guiding strategic decisions and helping clients navigate trade‑offs related to scope, timeline, cost, and risk

  • Provides day‑to‑day and strategic leadership over project teams, balancing execution with proactive risk identification and outcome protection, rather than task completion alone partnering with key Stoneridge internal resources to overcome risks and issues

  • Leads project planning, monitoring, and reporting with an emphasis on anticipating risk, surfacing options, and framing decisions in terms of impact and trade‑offs

  • Builds and maintains strong, trust‑based relationships with client PMs and senior stakeholders; independently leads strategic conversations with director‑level and executive client audiences

  • Proactively identifies risks, dependencies, and delivery challenges before they materialize, and brings forward recommended mitigation strategies and alternative paths

  • Challenges scope, sequencing, and delivery approach when necessary to protect business outcomes and delivery quality, while clearly articulating implications to clients

  • Adjusts communication style and level of detail based on audience and intent, ensuring stakeholders receive context, insight, and guidance - not just status updates

  • Uses escalation strategically and early to protect outcomes, align expectations, and remove blockers

  • Identifies opportunities to improve client outcomes beyond the original plan, including delivery optimizations, sequencing changes, or process improvements

  • Organizes and facilitates steering committees and governance forums that focus on decision‑making, alignment, and risk management, not just reporting

  • Maintains ownership of project financials, forecasts, and delivery health in Stoneridge tools, proactively communicating risks and variances with context and recommendations

  • Manages issues and escalations with empathy, professionalism, and strong interpersonal judgment

  • Mentors and coaches junior PMs and coordinators, modeling consultative behaviors, strategic thinking, and client partnership

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Business, Computer Science or related field or equivalent work experience

  • 8+ years actively managing projects in a project manager role including all end-to-end project lifecycle execution and hands‑on experience delivering projects through the full software development lifecycle (SDLC)

  • Has managed 3+ previous full lifecycle Dynamics 365 Implementations including at least 1 ERP project

  • Previous consulting experience required

  • Direct experience and ability to develop detailed project plans, scope documents/backlogs, project schedules with dependencies, and resource forecasts and plans

  • Ability to successfully manage budgets and timelines, proactively identifying issues with the ability to effectively communicate solutions to budget and timeline issues with clients

  • Formal PM training/certification strongly preferred (PMP, CAPM, CSM, etc.)

  • Formal Microsoft training/certifications preferred

  • Strong ability to quickly grasp complex and/or technical items and break them down into workable segments

  • Ability to work primarily independently and concurrently manage multiple projects, and/or multiple workstreams across a large, complex project

  • Ability to communicate effectively in both spoken and written English.

Core Competencies

Demonstrates expertise in managing large and complex Dynamics 365 projects, with a focus on client outcomes, risk management, and strategic decision-making. Proficient in project planning, financial management, and stakeholder communication, ensuring successful delivery through the full software development lifecycle.
