The Superintendent invites qualified and interested persons to apply for the position of Senior Food Service Worker within various locations.
This title is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission; meaning that a candidate for the position will be placed as a provisional employee. At a later date the candidate will be required to take an examination administered by the Civil Service Commission. Candidates must score and rank high enough on this examination in order to remain in the position as a permanent employee.
DEFINITION: Under direction of a Cook, Head Cook, Food Service Supervisor, or other supervisory official, assists with the work involved in food preparation and service and may take the lead in group of Food Service Workers, patients, or inmates engaged in storing and preparing food for cooking and in serving food; does related work as required.
QUALIFICATIONS AND REQUIREMENTS
1. Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
2. One (1) year of experience in general unskilled kitchen or food service work.
3. Must be ServSafe Certified and have a valid Food Handlers certificate.
4. Appointees will be required to possess a driver's license valid in New Jersey if the operation of a vehicle, rather than employee mobility, is necessary to perform the essential duties of the position.
BASIC FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
1. As assigned, acts as a general assistant in a kitchen, bakery, cannery, dining room, cafeteria, or other food preparation or service unit.
2. Serves special diets according to prescribed portions control guide set a by Dietitian.
3. Washes, scrubs, pares, hulls, cores, and prepares vegetables, fruits, and berries for cooking, or for serving using manual or power driven equipment.
4. As assigned, may assume the responsibility for certain phases of food preparation and cooking.
5. Assists in the cutting of meat and in baking.
6. Assists in keeping the kitchen or other areas in a safe, clean, and orderly condition at all times; cleans refrigerators.
7. Assists or takes the lead in the serving of food from the steam tables and other cooking utensils; arranges trays.
8. Delivers food to dining rooms and may assign employees in the delivery of this service.
9. May take the lead in the service of food.
10. Assists, as required, in the preparation of salads, desserts, and beverages.
11. Sets tables, changes linens, counts dishes, linen, and silverware.
12. As a lead worker, ensures that other assigned employees transport and deliver food in an efficient and timely manner.
13. When assigned to a dishwashing unit sees that dishes, trays, pots, pans, silverware, and kitchen and other food preparation and service equipment are properly washed and dried.
14. Washes kitchen, dining room tables, and food storage area.
15. Washes and polishes ranges, roasters, broilers, milk cans, and other equipment.
16. Polishes stainless steel equipment.
17. Receives, checks, weighs, measures, issues, and prepares records and inventories of food supplies and equipment.
18. Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and computerized information system used by the agency, office, or related units.
KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES
1. Knowledge of the preparation of vegetables and fruits for cooking.
2. Knowledge of the proper methods and materials used in cleaning, polishing, and in maintaining kitchen, storage, and food service areas in a clean, sanitary, orderly, and safe condition.
3. Ability to learn, understand, and acknowledge student's rights and privileges.
4. Ability to remember oral and written instructions and directions and to learn quickly from demonstrations.
5. Ability to serve food from steam tables or other utensils efficiently.
6. Ability to prepare trays and to set tables.
7. Ability to wait on tables and to deliver trays.
8. Ability to do and take the lead in the manual work involved in washing dishes, pots and pans, in polishing silverware and metal equipment, in keeping ranges, and broiler, roaster, and other equipment clean and polished, and other areas.
9. Ability to keep simple records.
10. Ability to keep and prepare records such as productions records, inventory, and temperature logs.
11. Ability to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
12. Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.
