As a Cancer Registry Intern, you'll typically assist with data collection, abstraction, and entry of cancer patient information into specialized databases. You may help review medical records, ensure data quality, and support ongoing cancer research projects. Interns often work closely with certified tumor registrars and oncology professionals, gaining hands-on experience in coding, reporting, and understanding cancer trends. This role provides valuable exposure to the workflow of a cancer registry and can be a stepping stone toward certification and more advanced roles in cancer data management.

What is a cancer registry internship?

A Cancer Registry Internship is a practical training program designed for students or recent graduates interested in the field of cancer data management. Interns work under the supervision of certified cancer registrars to learn how to collect, analyze, and report cancer patient data for hospitals, research organizations, or government agencies. The internship provides hands-on experience with medical records, data abstraction, and cancer registry software, helping interns prepare for certification and future careers in cancer registry or health information management.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cancer registry intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cancer Registry Intern, you need a foundational understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, data entry, and an interest in cancer data collection, typically gained through coursework in health information or related fields. Familiarity with cancer registry software (such as AbstractPlus or Registry Plus), ICD-O coding systems, and basic database management tools is commonly expected. Attention to detail, analytical thinking, and a commitment to confidentiality help interns excel in this role. These skills are vital for ensuring accurate cancer data collection and reporting, which supports research, patient care, and public health initiatives.
